Stevens, Francis: Nightmare!. v1. 08 Aug 2021

NIGHTMARE!
Being the Weird Adventures of an Unwilling Hero

Francis Stevens (1883-1948)

This ebook is derived from the version posted by Dr. Drib in another format.

A tourist from New York, sailing on the ill-fated liner Lusitania, wakens from a night’s sleep to find himself struggling in the seas off an uncharted island halfway around the world. To his dismay, he finds the island filled with huge monstrous creatures. Jones soon finds himself caught in a rivalry between two dangerous groups competing to extract a rare substance found only on the island — it turns lead into gold! A young lady has also been rescued, adding further complications. Ah, high adventure!

Nightmare! has been described as “resembling” Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Land That Time Forgot, which was published a year later.

==========
Francis Stevens was the pseudonym of Gertrude Barrows Bennett (1883–1948) who was the first major female writer of fantasy and science fiction in the United States. Bennett wrote a number of highly acclaimed fantasies between 1917 and 1923, and has been called “the woman who invented dark fantasy.”

Her work greatly influenced such writers as H. P. Lovecraft and A(braham) Merritt. Among her most famous books are Claimed (which H. P. Lovecraft called “One of the strangest and most compelling science fantasy novels you will ever read”) and the lost world novel The Citadel of Fear. Bennett also wrote an early dystopian novel, The Heads of Cerberus (1919).

Nightmare! was originally published in 1917, and is in the public domain where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.
