Lightbulb Free (Kindle DRM-free) The Classical Greek Reader [Ancient Source Texts Introduction]

The Classical Greek Reader by Kenneth J. Atchity (Wikipedia), a former professor of comparative literature and classics who later became a film producer, is his introductory historical source text sampler containing excerpted writings from various sources across many topics throughout the classical period of Ancient Greece, both well-known and obscure, accompanied by brief pieces introducing each author and giving more contextual information to aid in understanding their times, free for a limited time courtesy of small publisher Story Merchant Books (founded by Atchity himself).

This was originally published in 1996 by Henry Holt & Co as part of their Henry Holt Reference Books line and credited as by Kenneth John Atchity and was later reprinted by Oxford University Press as part of their Oxford Paperbacks line.

It was previously offered free in 2014, and you may wish to pair it with either of Atchity's also previously offered academic reprints: The Renaissance Reader and/or Homer's Iliad: The Shield of Memory.

Currently free and DRM-free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program)

Description
Scholarly commentary on the nuances of Greek writing fills library shelves, even entire libraries. Yet nothing can take the place of the documents themselves. The Classical Greek Reader marks an exciting departure from the traditional anthology approach to Greek literature and thought. By focusing not only on the big names but also on the less-familiar voices--the women, doctors, storytellers, herbalists, and romance writers--we are offered a glimpse of ancient Greece as we have rarely seen it.

Kenneth J. Atchity provides the reader with firsthand access to literary, artistic, social, political, religious, scientific, and philosophical texts that shaped Greek thinking. From Homeric epics to the histories of Plutarch, and from the poems of Korinna to the romances of Heliodorus, this invaluable reference provides readers with modern translations of the voices that shaped the classical Greek spirit. Each entry contains an introduction identifying the author and providing information that allows readers to consider these ancient texts in a new light.

Here are the wonders of the Greek world presented in a modern, accessible manner, perfect for those looking to refresh their acquaintance with the classics and for those who have yet to explore the exciting intellectual energy of the ancient Greek world.
