There is no copyright

This thread starts with the concept that copyright has been abolished globally. All concept of intellectual property has been negated.

What nirvana are we now living in? Sure, all current movies, tv, music is now essentially free, or priced just above the cost to manufacture and distribute. What a boon to the poor.

All knowledge created and put into book form up to now is free available to all. What could be better than that?

Napster will surely be revived as well as hundreds of other sites prepared to make instant and free access to all music, tv, movies and books. What could be better than that?

The world is now a better place.

Discuss.

You replied to an empty discussion?

We have an ongoing series of discussions about copyright -- whether it's a good or a bad thing....at all...not just in it's current implementation.

So, rather than wondering about copyrights effects on 17th century Britain and Germany -- why not use NOW. How hard is it to imagine the world with no concept of intellectual property?

It would surely be all roses and candy canes right? Knowledge would no longer be withheld from the poor. Greedy corporations would go bust practically over night. All of us could get copies of ebooks from "the price fix six" without giving those greedy bastards a dime.

It's all benefit with no drawback -- right?

It depends on how much imagination you've got left by this point in life. Also, if the scenario interests you at all, that could also help. Think of it as exercise.

I believe there are both benefits and tremendous pitfalls in the scenario, but I am far too exhausted to even begin an examination of the issues. Argh!

And everyone who tries to make an honest living from any form of content creation - eg, computer programmers, authors, musicians, film makers - is out of a job. Who do you imagine is going to create content in this fantasy world of yours?

Sadly there are no more big budget, or even small budget, movies being made. Most professional authors and musicians have stopped writing and recording, and television is a wasteland of repeats. No more new software, no new video games, no new anything really. Amazon is scraping by selling clothes, tools and groceries. B&N, Microsoft, and Apple are gone. No one buys or sells creative content of any sort now since everything is free for the taking.

Surely you jest. Not everyone is a selfish capital pig. Look at the open source movement and the thousands of folks giving away their work on Smashwords and the like. Heck, even Amazon and Apple have free sections in their stores. On what grounds to you suggest that folks would stop creating just because selfish people like you demand to be paid for your work?

Movies were made long before there was copyright. Oh well, not movies...but symphonies surely were. Is there any reason to think that movies are any different than symphonies?

Did books get invented AFTER copyright? If books could and did exist for a couple hundred years before copyright -- what gives us any indication they wouldn't exist afterward?

What you won't have are big Hollywood studios gouging the public with movie tickets priced out of our reach. You won't have those bastard music executives and publishers making big big bucks off of musicians and authors.

Strangely enough I like to be able to eat and pay the mortgage each month. You're going to force me out of my job as a computer programmer so that you can get stuff for free? I have a better idea - why not work for a living and use the money you make to pay others for the stuff that they make?

The absence of a legal framework to protect intellectual property ownership leads to ever-stronger and more obtrusive DRM on the part of publishers who want to protect their monopoly status over their titles.

I don't see it as Nirvana.

You just aren't being creative enough....stuck in the obsolete business practices of the last couple centuries. Surely the creative minds of today will find a way to make money.

Musicians make money from touring. Beethoven taught folks to play the piano. Authors could create special versions to sell for big bucks to the rich.

On and on we go...while never depriving the poor of their due right to having everything for free.

History has proven that copyright actually stymies book creation. There hasn't been a single worthwhile book created since the advent of the copyright.

If we just did away with greedy corporate publishers....then the world would explode in genius in the form of folks writing free books.

Seriously? How do you earn your living? Does someone pay you for your production? Would you continue doing the work for their benefit if you weren't paid.

Sorry, but that statement proves that you're just being silly.

If you honestly believe that no worthwhile books have been written since the 17th century, we really have no more to discuss.

It's not the 1750s any more. The days when it was labor intensive and expensive to make copies of creative works are well and truly gone. These days it's nearly effortless to make digital copies of just about everything. Do you seriously think people are going to continue to invest millions of dollars into movie and television projects that will be freely copied and distributed the moment they hit the market?

As for authors, are Stephen King or Dean Koontz or any other big name author going to keep writing when they can no longer make a living at it? A few will, as will some musicians, but like I said, most will abandon creative work and look for something that actually affords them a living.
