Mercer, Harold: A Very Gentlemanly Murder, and other stories v1, 14 April 2024

This is the fourth and final collection of short stories by Harold Mercer (1882-1952), an Australian journalist and short story writer to be uploaded here. There are 50 stories, and they were all collected from The Bulletin, the Australian weekly news magazine which ran from 1880 to 2008. They are mostly humour, although "Who was Peter Gourlay?" would not be out of place is "Weird Tales" magazine. Some stories involve the reminscences of the fictional Mrs Parsley, the landlady of a Sydney boarding house in the years between WW1 and WW2, and her often stranger tenants. Mercer knew all about living in Sydney boarding houses in that period, from first-hand experience.

The four collections are:
1: The Manor Chamber Mystery, and other stories
2: Locksley is Out, and other stories
3: The Grave of Pierre Lamont, and other stories
4: A Very Gentlemanly Murder, and other stories.

This 50-story collection is roughly 125,000 words.

He also published a single novel, "Amazon Island", a "lost civilisation" tale, which is already uploaded in the MobileRead Library along with the first three collections mentioned above.
