I don't use the sony library software, so I just drag and drop my music tracks into the audio folder of my media folder on the 650 when it is connected via usb cable. Just use the windows explorer or mac finder to navigate into the reader folders.

If you're using the Sony Library software, you add the music to your Library, drag it to the music folder, and then Synch the music Collection to the reader

It does support m4a (mpeg4-aac).
