When did...
they decide to change Mobi books to Kindle books here in the library? Just curious though it does make sense as Mobi books are the format that Kindle uses.

Actually, it is wrong. If you are using Mobipocket Reader on an old device, you might not know what Kindle Books are. They should be Mobi for people to know.

A lot of old devices can't read newer mobipocket ebooks as the software isn't always updated. That happened to the Franklin Ebookman 911 that I have somewhere. Mobipocket.com decided to discontinue supporting it. I was not happy about that at the time.

Why not just do away with them once we make sure we have a good ePub? That would solve any problem.

Not only as a still proud owner of some Bookeen devices I find it a little bit sad. I've never seen a problem with the correct naming of the format "mobi" as the suitable devices are all mentioned in the bracket.

While people who have been involved in ebooks for more than five years have no problem identifying Mobipocket files as the ones suitable for Kindle devices, there are many people new to ebooks for whom this is not at all obvious.
Mobipocket is dead. Kindle format makes a lot more sense going forward. (And anyone who's been using ebooks since before the Kindle came on the scene also has no problem knowing what's meant by Kindle format.) |

To answer the question, we changed it yesterday, for the reasons that Paul described. The entire moderating team felt that this was a necessary and worthwhile change. Both the library forum AND the book formats forum names have been changed from "Mobi" to "Kindle".

I was confused by this thread because I've always used the "E-Books" drop down list at the top of the forum. It still lists "Mobipocket Download Guide" and "Mobipocket (MOBI)".
I could not figure out where you were seeing Kindle books until HarryT's post. |

Thanks - we'd forgotten about that. We'll get it changed.

That would be like us calling you Frank when your name is Paul. We don't do that because it's WRONG. So don't arbitrarily change the name of eBooks the Kindle handles because it's WRONG. |

Whether Mobi or KF8/AZW3 they all open up on a Kindle device and are formatted to have a TOC (at least the one's here at MR do) so why not have an all inclusive header? the KF8 and AZW3 books are through Amazon while compatible ebooks in Mobi format are found here so there isn't a danger of mixing them up so what's the problem? The only real difference between Mobi and the KF8/AZW3 files is that the latter two have DRM on them as I understand it.

The only problem here is Jon's obsessive hatred of Amazon.

I think it should be named mobi / kindle books so it's clear to everyone involved.
