Kobo Desktop App Question

I recently ordered a wifi Kobo from Borders US, so have the Borders app, but have thus far been unable to purchase(or download free books) from Borders, and am not even sure if they set up my account.

I have Calibre and ADE, so am not relying on the desktop app to manage my books at all.

Am I better to download a desktop app from an alternative source, and is this even possible?? eg. the Kobobooks app?

As I understand it, I do need the desktop app for updates etc, or have I got this wrong?

Unless Borders is very different from Kobo, they do not have to create an account for you--you do it yourself on the Borders website. The Kobo associated site in NZ is Whitecoulis, right? You can download their desktop--or the Kobo one, or the one from Borders, but you can only sync with one of those Kobo associated accounts. Use the other stores by downloading the purchased/freebooks as ePUB using Adobe Digital Editions. Be sure to use the same login information on ADE and for all of the bookstores you will use with Kobo.

With the WiFi edition, you will get your firmware updates over the air when you ether shop wirelessly or update your library wirelessly. The desktop application updates through the desktop application.

taming - thanks for the reply. I realise I needed to create the account myself, the issue I was having was that it was not letting me because I live outside the US.
No matter - I uninstalled it, and re-installed the Kobo one, where I have an account set up already, and know they are willing to sell me books.

Now is it possible to get updates without syncing with the desktop app, because I just did this for the first time, but now have several books on my reader twice because I had already loaded them through Calibre. Though I assume I can delete duplicates in Calibre without too much bother, it's going to annoy me if I have to do this everytime I sync

With the newer desktop, I believe you can right click on the book and remove it from the desktop application library. That way it will not sync. I run the beta, so I have trouble remembering if it is in your version as well. If you have two of the same books on your reader, you can also remove one, when you are in "Books", not "I'm Reading" directly from the device--no visit to Calibre needed. I believe this is currently WiFi only.
