North Korea
Since they're in the news these days, I wanted to put in a plug for this solid five-star book: Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea. If you're into audiobooks (instead), Karen White's narration is outstanding!

I'll second this (I read rather than listened, though). In fact, I cribbed it from an earlier mention by SeaBookGuy and was very glad I did.
It's been gratifying to know, while listening to the news, what forms the public mourning would take. I heard an NPR story recounting how people were watched at the death of Kim Il Sung to see if they reached the requisite level of grief. Having read Nothing to Envy, I knew that. |
