I rarely point out individual O.A. publishers anymore, because so many publishers are into it now. What I need to find is a master list of O.A. publishers. In fact, I think that I have one listed under some bookmark somewhere. I'll look for it. I'm still looking for a real good search engine for O.A. books. The ones that I have found are inadequate.

Anyone can see the benefit of O.A. to book readers, but I'm still fuzzy about what benefit it is to the authors. If I'm not mistaken, it is they who have to pony up the money to publish the books, and then they get zero in monetary returns.
For new books I have a feeling that it's a combination of motives; 'information should be free', 'publish or perish' and 'I want to be read'. For older books any profit has already been made and maybe, just maybe new readers will buy more books by that author. I'm also under the impression that academic authors do not typically earn much money from their writings due to 'publish or perish' and small markets.

Thanks. Yeah, all of that sounds reasonable.

Academia.edu is probably the equivalent for articles as O.A.is to books (although I think that there are some articles published O.A., also). On the website's first page, they boast, "A study published in PLOS ONE found that papers uploaded to Academia receive a 69% boost in citations over 5 years." That's an acknowledgment that "getting your name out there" is important.

"Publish or perish" is an idea that resonates a lot. I've heard that expression for a long time. If professors don't publish things, they're likely not going to move up very far or very fast. That may suit some professors fine, but most are ambitious just like most people in other professions are.

Then there's the matter of tenure. I don't quite understand the concept, but I know that professors want to get it. How much that they publish might have an effect on obtaining it.

And, again, I don't know much about it, but the C.V. (curriculum vitae) is extremely important to ambitious academics. I know that it is, or contains, a list of all of the things that an academic-type person has published. The more that they publish the more that they can pad the C.V. when they want to move up and/or move out.

It seems that there are quite a few old books that have been made O.A., but it seems to me that most of them are newly written. I'd like to see a breakdown somewhere giving the percentages that new O.A. books have and that old O.A. books have.

I definitely agree with you when you say that you're "under the impression that academic authors do not typically earn much money from their writings." After perusing the selection in the $15 ebook sale of Palgrave's going on now, it does seem like some of those books would be of interest only to about two or three people in the world! But, I noticed that many, if not most, if not all of the books are intended as textbooks, so there are students who are pretty much forced to buy or rent them; but the amount of sales from probably most of them are still just a "drop in the bucket," because there are bound to be so few classes in the entire world on some of the subjects, because they are so abstruse. So, why not go O.A.?

God Rest Ye Merry: Why Christmas is the Foundation for Everything - Kindle edition by Douglas Wilson

"The free book today is God Rest Ye Merry, my celebration of the importance of Christmas. The book contains Advent readings, if that is something you do with your family, and it also contains what might be called an apologetic for Christmas. Given the nature of the book, this is one of mine that might be considered a perennial.Or, failing that, a potted poinsettia, in keeping with the season." Douglas Wilson

I think that is the hardback price. Just looked at the Kindle Price and US is still $4.99 and CDN has dropped 4 cents.

Two possibilities

Someday I'll learn to buy the book and logout, instead I start wandering through picks and recommendations. Thought these might be of interest. Unfortunately these prices seem limited to the US.

The Theology of B. B. Warfield (Foreword by Sinclair B. Ferguson): A Systematic Summary - Kindle edition
by Fred G. Zaspel
https://www.amazon.com/Theology-Warf...dp/B0042JSLP6/

Digital List Price: $40.00
Print List Price: $40.00
Kindle Price: $9.99

one reviewer:
“Serious Christians who have dipped into Warfield find his writings to be a wholly admirable mix of rigorous exegesis, mature theological synthesis, and frank devotion to Christ. Much of his work is known only to specialists, not least because when Warfield first published it, it was scattered over many journals and books. Indeed, a fair bit of it was never published. Zaspel’s Warfield remedies the problem admirably: one hopes and prays that it will entice a new generation of readers to delve deeply into Warfield’s contributions.”
―D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; Cofounder, The Gospel Coalition

And a bit off the usual business take, using the apostle Paul to illustrate 26 characteristics of leadership.

The Book on Leadership - Kindle edition
by John F. MacArthur.

https://www.amazon.com/Book-Leadersh...dp/B000SES0EG/

Digital List Price: $6.99
Print List Price: $13.99
Kindle Price: $1.99

SALE Two books by Nabeel Qureshi.

The first on his life as a Muslim and conversion to Christianity. The second goes into more details of Islam. Have read both and find them great for a better understanding of Islam.

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus: A Devout Muslim Encounters Christianity- 3rd edition - Kindle
by Nabeel Qureshi

"In Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, now expanded with new bonus content, Nabeel Qureshi describes his dramatic journey from Islam to Christianity, complete with friendships, investigations, and supernatural dreams along the way."

"Providing an intimate window into a loving Muslim home, Qureshi shares how he developed a passion for Islam before discovering, almost against his will, evidence that Jesus rose from the dead and claimed to be God. Unable to deny the arguments but not wanting to deny his family, Qureshi struggled with an inner turmoil that will challenge Christians, Muslims, and all those who are interested in the world’s greatest religions."

$3.99 US https://www.amazon.com/Seeking-Allah...dp/B07BB54FS5/

$3.19 CDN https://www.amazon.ca/Seeking-Allah-...dp/B07BB54FS5/

No God but One: Allah or Jesus? (with Bonus Content): A Former Muslim Investigates the Evidence for Islam and Christianity - Kindle edition
by Nabeel Qureshi

"In this anticipated follow-up book, Nabeel reveals what he discovered in the decade following his conversion, providing a thorough and careful comparison of the evidence for Islam and Christianity--evidence that wrenched his heart and transformed his life."

"No God but One: Allah or Jesus? addresses the most important questions at the interface of Islam and Christianity: How do the two religions differ? Are the differences significant? Can we be confident that either Christianity or Islam is true? And most important, is it worth sacrificing everything for the truth?"

$3.99 US https://www.amazon.com/God-but-One-I...dp/B01863JQXO/

$3.99 CDN https://www.amazon.ca/God-but-One-In...dp/B01863JQXO/

Something related. These are not the official videos that are sold as a companion to the book. These were recorded, with David Wood, just before Nabeel's untimely death from stomach cancer. It was the discussions and studies with David that helped bring Nabeel to question Islam and accept Christ.

Unofficial "Seeking Allah Finding Jesus" Series
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...y2QznenMeX9ogk

"In this video series with me, Nabeel Qureshi, and my friend David Wood, we cover some of the highlights of my book Seeking Allah Finding Jesus, providing brief insights into ministering to Muslims as well as responding to the most common Muslim objections to Christianity. It is designed for Christians and Muslims alike. I pray it will be encouraging and edifying for you!"

NOT ON SALE Included so you are aware of it. Gets into some of the reasons it would be hard to "reform" Islam.

Answering Jihad: A Better Way Forward - Kindle edition
by Nabeel Qureshi

"From New York Times bestselling author and former Muslim Nabeel Qureshi comes this personal, challenging, and respectful answer to the many questions surrounding jihad, the rise of ISIS, and Islamic terrorism."

Would someone please help out?

Tan Books, a retailer of Roman Catholic books and other supplies sent me an email message saying that all (apparently) of their ebooks are on sale for just $1.00 each. All of their ebooks amount to roughly 200 in number, by my estimation.

From looking over the downloadable books (a few are not downloadable), I think that a person could get a real good education about Roman Catholicism by purchasing a select handful of these tomes.

What a super, super sale!

But, here's the problem: in order to make a useful post, I wanted to test out the purchasing process (I haven't decided yet which of the ebooks that I'm going to buy), to make sure that it works. I tried putting different ebooks in the shopping cart, entering the proper discount code (ONETAN), and going through the purchasing process up to the point of the entering payment step, numerous times. But I never could not get any of the ebooks to show up for $1.00 each.

Please help out if you can. There may be something simple that I'm missing. But I've worked on this as long as I can tonight (it's well after 4 o'clock in the morning here (EST) right now). I'm steeling myself to make yet another phone call, or sending yet another email message to yet another customer service department tomorrow, sometime up in the day, if it's necessary.

Here's the link to the sale page (there doesn't appear to be a link to it from Tan Books' homepage).

I know this isn't what you're asking, but I'm going to comment anyway. I took a look at the offerings and it looks like a lot of junk to me. Typical vanity press/self-published pap, with a few public domain books (the most worthwhile) thrown in. A case of getting what you pay for, except I don't think most of the books are even worth the buck. It wouldn't be my choice as a way to learn about Catholicism. Having said that, I don't have any recommendations, cheap or not.

Thanks to both of you.

I must be doing something wrong; again, it's probably something simple.

However, I'll certainly give issybird's comments consideration, and look at (and in) the selection more carefully. It might not be worth the trouble to try again to get the checkout to work for me, given her assessment. At any rate, we/you/I have until Christmas night at 12 midnight EST to do our vetting.
