Based on a recommendation from a friend, I've been re-reading The Exorcist by audio, narrated by the author Blatty. At first he was too slow and heavy on pauses, but the friend is right - if you keep going, the book can eventually hook you and his narration seems to really grow on you

Dies the Fire really grabbed me - I'm on book 5 of the Emberverse/Change books now. The villain ended up being better rounded, and got less page time, than in the Nantucket books. The narrator is a strange case: superbly immersive 95% of the time, then he will pronounce some ordinary word in an insane way. It's a fascinating world, and Stirling is great both at depicting battles and conveying tactics and strategy.

So Funny!!

Just started Sphere by Michael Crichton and narrated by Scott Brick. Early chapters but already a good setting stage. Didn't see the movie, so I'll probably watch it after the book.

I have just finished We Are Legion (We Are Bob) and For We Are Many by Dennis E. Taylor. Listened to them back to back, and have started on the third, All These Worlds.

I am not usually a big reader of science fiction, but I thought I would try the first of the Bobiverse books simply because I am a HUGE fan of Ray Porter. And as usual, he does an amazing job! It took me a couple of chapters to get used to the "rhythm" of the book, but then it just took off! And, now into the third of the series, it flows seamlessly together. I am thoroughly enjoying the adventure.

I'm one of the rare people who enjoyed the movie a lot - not getting all the flack on it.

I liked the book, too. Was curious on an audio re-read.

I'm not enjoying the audio read of The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie on Scribd, going to DNF in this format. I will read in e-book form later

I had started Christie's Death on the Nile, not really liking Suchet's narration. Abandoned that for putting myself in the library queue for Kenneth Brannaugh's instead.

One of the nice things about books going into public domain is that you get some serious voice talent doing versions of the work. I loved Brannaugh's movie adaptions of various Shakespeare plays. Just grabbed his audiobook for Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile.

About halfway through the Japanese novella Convenience Store Woman, which is okay for three hours; much longer and I'd DNF it.

I started, then soon abandoned, "Consider Phlebas," the first of the Culture novels by Iain M. Banks. I could not get into it on any level. I only became aware of the series because of learning that's where Elon Musk got the names of the SpaceX recovery ships. After several chapters, and reading some reviews for a sense of what was to come, there was just nothing I liked about it.

I switched over to the next Harry Bosch book on my list, "Angel's Flight," which was a pretty quick listen, and up to snuff with the rest of the series.

I also recently finished "Troubled Blood" the latest Cormoran Strike book by Robert Galbraith (aka JKR). Another enjoyable mystery, and I didn't even mind having to keep my British-American Slang dictionary handy!
BTW, While the mystery story itself is self contained, as are all the books in the series, I don't recommend a reader start off with this book...it's about twice as long as the others with a lot more character detail built off previous books. I think it would seem a particular slog if you didn't already know the characters and relationships from previous books. They are best read in order, if you want to invest in the characters as much as in the detective stories.

Right now I'm listening to The Great Courses "Law School for Everyone" which I'm finding absolutely fascinating.

Today I finished Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing Las Vegas (read by Ron McLarty). It was quite a wild ride. He and his lawyer remind me of some of the people in my family, only without all the disposable cash.

I am re-reading Jaws in audio but I have to say it's rather boring in this format. I prefered it reading. Of course it's a time when the movie is far superior for most people

I had the same issue with Jurassic Park - loved the book, but the audio wasn't the same

Interesting. When I reread Jaws as an audiobook a couple of years ago, I thought it was much better than I'd remembered. Not in the same league as the movie, but pretty good.
