some usage ideas:
# mntroot rw
# ln -s /mnt/us/system/screensaver.png /opt/amazon/screen_saver/600x800/screensaver.png
# mntroot ro
# ./xplanet -num_times 1 -geometry 600x800 -background <screensaver file> -output /mnt/us/system/screensaver.png

put the last command in your crontab to give yourself a dynamic view of the earth.

try using photoshop to rebalance the curves and strip the color data.
