It was only a matter of time before this happened. I honestly thought it would be one of the bigger publishers, though, not the NYT.

Also many countries don't have as generous "Fair Use" laws as USA, or none at all, simply civil actions, as in some countries copyright violation is civil violation (suing), not proactively prosecution as it's not a criminal violation.

The big companies behind the LLMs are going to make a lot of laywers and barristers rich no matter how it pans out. The cost of building these sytems in money and environment is vast, so vast one wonders what the "end plan" to monetise it is.
