So you're into carbon footprints....

I know this is trolling, but the article is too unintentionally funny not to pass on...

I guess dogs and cats in Asia are "dual-use," since they get eaten, too...

But the best way of compensating for that paw or clawprint is to make sure your animal is dual purpose, the Vales urge. Get a hen, which offsets its impact by laying edible eggs, or a rabbit, prepared to make the ultimate environmental sacrifice by ending up on the dinner table.

"Rabbits are good, provided you eat them," said Robert Vale.
How exactly are rabbits prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice?

That was trolling RSE, I'm a little disappointed in you...

This article is hilarious. I could just imagine me telling Ryleigh, "Honey, I know you love your bunny but Mommy needs to reduce our carbon footprint by serving him for dinner tonight." Yeah, that would go over REAL well!

A yorkie wouldn't make a decent mouthful, now a St. Bernard, on the other hand ...

During WWII, rabbits were raised to be sold and eating, due to the shortage (downright unavailability) of beef and pork.

My husbands family did this. They lived in downtown LA, not exactly farmland, but many families kept chickens also.

I realize that today, as a society, we don't see these animals as food, but once upon a time.....

We don't? Rabbit's still a menu and market item down this way...but then again, here they're a significant pest.
There's an old saying here that ends "...and thank your mother for the rabbits". I recall mum saying that, while she was a kid (in a large family), and her dad was in the middle of a dockworkers' strike, people anonymously left food (such as rabbits) on their front doorstep overnight.

Rabbit is still eaten here too. But somehow I find it wrong to have a rabbit for your kid and eat it for christmas (which is a time where a lot of rabbits are eaten here). If you hold rabbits primarily for food, I'm okay with it.

I wonder what the carbon footprint of my mother is then... She has 2 cars, 1 camper, 6 dogs...

Rabbits, being vegetarians, probably have a very small carbon footprint.

I remember Archie Bunker saying goldfish make the best pets because they don't bark, don't bite, and best of all, by the time you're tired of them, they're dead.

Rabbits rarely make noise, rarely bite, and best of all, when you get tired of them, it's dinnertime!

I'm aware that people still eat rabbit. My point was that an 8 year old child (not raised on a farm) sees most animals as pets, especially something as cute as a rabbit. Ryleigh would be horrified if I asked her to give up her pet for consumption. Of course, she thinks cows are cute, too. I'm fairly certain she's made the connection between cows and hamburger but I don't think she would consider a cow a "pet of choice". Much to big to bring into the house. My grandfather raised steer on his farm in Iowa and every year we would make the trek to his farm to get a freezer full of meat. When they finally explained where the meat was coming from, I cried my heart out over the loss of Flossy.

I'm only offering a bit of dark humor. I could eat a rabbit, but not one that has ever had a name. To eat a pet would be the ultimate violation of a trust. Animals generally like me, and I suppose a big part of the reason is that I deal honestly with them and treat them with respect.

On the other hand, as a Vietnam vet who regularly ate what was sold along country roads, I've probably eaten my share of dog meat.
