Thanks - so even 5% doesn't look that bad, for many applications.

No it is not that bad. It is perfectly suitable for textbook illustrations and animations. How vivid the colors look depends more on the contrast. Similar to how unlit eink indoors looks a little bit greyish, while outside in bright sunlight it appears white.

I had an Ectaco Jetbook Color if anyone remembers those. Even that managed to look pretty good if you took it outside under a blazing sun. Unfortunately living in England that didn't happen very often and indoors it was muddy and washed out.

Color, contrast and refresh rate look good but there is obvious glare in the third picture.

Obvious glare? If you wanted to go out of your way, even eink can be photographed with obvious glare. It is not an angle you would normally use to look at the display.

Don't get me wrong, my criticism comes from a place of love, I would actually buy a tablet with this display right here were it available, it's obviously superior to EInk. It's just that it was supposed to be that much better. I wonder if the glare is because of the glass substrate or because of the frontlight this sample is supposed to have.

Like I said, I don't think it matters in real life use cases. Eink without extra light layer or capacitive touch layer has glare if you angle it right against a very bright light (e.g. the first gen Kindle Touch) The advantages over eink is the color, refresh rate and higher reflectivity. Also the penalty of eink is very high energy consumption while refreshing the image, so basically only made for static images that change seldom. If the specs are to be believed, then CLEARink with color is as reflective as eink without.

It's certainly a much more impressive prototype than last year. Let's hope we see it in production and in a shipping product soon.

It is a prototype cobbled together for a demo, not a commercial product. I don't think you need to worry that retail devices will have the same shiny piece of glass in front as this display.
