Just joined today, but have followed for several days. I followed your direction exactly and it worked great. Already converting those books I was unable to because of 1.19 version.
Thanks for the great advise

I have 1.17.1 but the ebooks still roll over into Calibre as xxx.ebok, and without conversion are not readable (I convert to ePub). I've followed this thread and the one on the Calibre bugfix page. So far, no joy in the fixes. I can and do move the ebooks into Calibre, convert to something readable, and then edit metadata, download covers, etc., but it's tedious. I'll continue following both boards. Maybe a miracle will occur or someone will point out something more nuanced in the process that will resolve this.

Sorry? I don't understand your problem. If you can convert the ebooks in calibre to your preferred format, what more do you want?

Just downloaded a new book from Amazon using the "Download for Transfer via USB" and so it loads fine into Calibre, but I can't View it with the Calibre reader even though I have the proper ALF plug-in installed.

I wonder if Amazon has changed something again.

Detailed help with DRM removal (e.g. suggesting things you may need to do to get it to work) is not permitted at MobileRead.

I suggest you ask at Apprentice Alf's blog or Apprentice Harper's github repository.

I am very sorry to inform you that a rollback to "Amazon for Kindle" version 17 helps only for the first time after you have installed it! Even unchecking the "automatic update" - box doesn`t help, because the next time you start the program, it automatically updates to version 19! So what to do? Always reinstalling version 17 again and again?

Unchecking the box has always worked fine for me (including with 1.17). I've never had a version of K4PC update on it's own when that is unchecked. Not sure what might be causing it not to work for you.

This might be another option for you though if you're stuck with 1.19

You are only correct for how you are installing 1.17, but the rest of us are proof it doesn't have to be that way. After it updates 1.17 to 1.19 uncheck the auto update then install 1.17 over the top of your existing 1.19 install and you will be fine with no need to worry about it auto updating. Of course if you keep uninstalling 1.19 before you install 1.17 you'll have a rough time since it will always upgrade (or schedule the upgrade) before you have a chance to stop it.

Exclamation Automatic Update of K4PC

In the meantime I found a way to prevent K4PC to do an automatic update:
1.) Uninstall K4PC version 1.19
2.) Download K4PC version 1.17
3.) CUT INTERNET CONNECTION !!!!!
4.) Install K4PC version 1.17
5.) Open K4PC version 1.17 - you will get a message that you are not connected to the internet (of course!) - ignore it.
6.) Uncheck the box "Automatic update..." under "Options" and SAVE it.
7.) Reestablish Internet connection and a message will pop up, that you have to register in Amazon again (since your former registration has gone, when uninstalling K4PC version 1.19)
8.) Having done so, a message will pop up, asking if you want to a.) update to version 1.19; b.) skip the update and c.) cancel --> of course click on "skip the update" (This is the important step, which was missing, when I`ve installed K4PC version 1.17 and internet connection was on).
9.) Save the whole and close it.
10.) Now you have K4PC version 1.17, not updating automatically, when you open it next time.

Thanks for taking the time to outline this for the folks.

Alternatively anyone can do as I suggested in post 53 . If you are starting with K4PC version 1.19 uncheck the box "Automatic update..." under "Options" and SAVE it. Close K4PC then do the following.

1.) Download K4PC version 1.17
2.) Install K4PC version 1.17 (without uninstalling version 1.19)
3.) Verify Automatic update is still unchecked
4.) Done

While the 1.17 solution works for now, Amazon is determined to move all their content to a proprietary format and use the near-monopoly of the kindle to drive this process. If you have downgraded from 1.19 to 1.17, Amazon knows who you are and why you have done it - dont imagine they arent watching this process at both a macro and a micro level. I give the worksround a maximum of 2 years. Not only readers but some publishers also dont like this but they are powerless against Amazon.

To what end? Why would Amazon care if clients purchase books and load them into a program such as Calibre?

This is ever more out of the scope of the thread!
Amazon does not sell you Kindle content like a bookshop sells you books, an anonymous sale and you hand your cash over and walk off with a book.
Their business model is to retain control of all content and everything about its usage; ultimately you are effectively leasing not owning this content. Nothing of this content should leak 'into the wild' via calibre or whatever. Additionally, Amazon wants to capture data about you and what when where and how you are reading (also watching and listening to of course)

Interesting, the person who decided to move the discussion off topic seemingly takes offense that they were somehow questioned about their "out of the scope" comment?

@ltr If Amazon does in fact track things to that level I think they will eventually find some customers buying fewer books through their service. Personally I bought more books through Amazon once I was able to format shift the books. Since the writing is on the wall I have already started shifting my purchases to other sellers.

.
I wasn't taking offence in any way I was apologising for dragging the thread off topic. The main point is that there's no way this will be a long term solution and people need to adjust their expectations accordingly. Feel free to start a new thread if you want to discuss.
