The Man in Black by Elly Griffiths is £0.99 at Amazon UK today.

This is a recent (18 June 2024!) collection of short stories, with stories set in most of her series, including Dr Ruth Galloway, Brighton and Harbinder Kaur.

RUN, don't walk - only a few hours left

Martin Walker's eighteenth and latest Bruno book, A Grave in the Woods, is at £0.99 in the UK, with that odd (but much appreciated) UK thing of putting new books on sale for £0.99 for one day, not too long after they are published. And this one's so new, it's not even out in the US yet, and won't be out here for three more weeks!

I had gotten a little unhappy with the series a few books back (still good, just not great), when I felt it had drifted a bit away from its La France profonde roots, and had gotten a bit unbelievable - how many international terrorists can really show up in St Denis? But I have liked the last couple. So I have high hopes for this one...

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CP869XMY
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/a-grave-in-the-woods-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
The long arm of history reaches into the present in Bruno's latest case when three sets of bones are discovered, buried deep in the woods outside the Dordogne town of St Denis. It appears that the remains have lain there since World War 2. Bruno must investigate who the bones belong to and whether their burial amounts to a war crime.

Bruno has other concerns too. After weeks of heavy autumn rain, the normally tranquil Dordogne river has risen to record levels, compromising the upriver dams that control the Vezere that flows through St Denis, bringing the threat of a devastating flood.

As ever, Bruno must rely on his wits, tenacity and people skills to ensure that past wrongs don't result in present violence, and to keep his little town and its inhabitants safe from harm.

I Am the Only Running Footman is the eighth Richard Jury title by Martha Grimes. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US, but not, at least as of now, at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BW4OMUW

Spoiler:
Quote:
In a rainy ditch in a Devon wood, a hitchhiker is found dead. Almost a year later, on another rainy night, another murder; this time, however, the victim is found just outside a pub called I Am the Only Running Footman, near Berkeley Square in London’s fashionable Mayfair District. Devon policeman Brian Macalvie believes the two murders are connected. And thus, detective Richard Jury is drawn into the so-called Porphyria killings.

From the streets of London to the village of Somers Abbas, Jury and Macalvie are joined by the stolid if hypochondriac Sergeant Wiggins and the reluctant Melrose Plant. They meet in another pub, the Mortal Man, and, amidst the clatter and cry of the Warboys family, they ponder a labyrinthine set of clues.

And while I'm posting, two other recent Grimes price drops are still good, atlhough only at Kindle US right now:

Crescent Dawn is the twenty-first Dirk Pitt book. Ostensibly, per the webpage and cover, it's by Clive Cussler with his son Dirk Cussler (not sure who was named after whom), but given that SYKM says that Clive Cussler died in 2020, and that the last few books were already co-written, it seems it really must have been written by just the son ???

In any case, it's on sale in the US for $0.99 right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNVY7BB6
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/crescent-dawn-9

Spoiler:
Quote:
An ancient cargo long thought lost is found. With terrible consequences . . .

Dirk Pitt is surveying in the Middle East when a stroke of luck reveals an Ottoman wreck with a very curious cargo. While investigating the find, he foils a night raid on Istanbul's Topkapi Palace Museum. This puts Pitt at the centre of a race to acquire a series of legendary artefacts.

Meanwhile, the region is being pushed to the brink of war by a series of explosions across Turkey and Egypt. Finding that his search for the artefacts is linked to the attacks, Pitt must prevent a deranged brother and sister's fanatical plans succeeding...

Packed with breathtaking suspense and fired by an extraordinary imagination, Crescent Dawn is a barnstorming read starring Dirk Pitt for all fans of action, suspense and intrigue.

The Scarpetta Factor is the seventeenth Kay Scarpetta book by Patricia Cornwell. It's £0.99 right now in the UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002WWKZLS
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/the-scarpetta-factor-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
It is the week before Christmas. The effects of the credit crunch have prompted Dr Kay Scarpetta to offer her services pro bono to New York City's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. But in no time at all, her increased visibility seems to precipitate a string of dramatic and unsettling events. She is asked live on the air about the sensational case of Hannah Starr, who has vanished and is presumed dead. Moments later during the same broadcast, she receives a startling call-in from a former psychiatric patient of Benton Wesley's.

When she returns after the show to the apartment where she and Benton live, she finds a suspicious package - possibly a bomb - waiting for her at the front desk. Soon the apparent threat on Scarpetta's life finds her embroiled in a deadly plot that includes a famous actor accused of an unthinkable sex crime and the disappearance of a beautiful millionairess with whom Scarpetta's niece Lucy seems to have shared a secret past . . .

Crescent Dawn is from 2010. There are 27 Dirk Pitt books by now, with the latest two (which are past-2020) only credited to Dirk Cussler. Clive is still on the cover, though.

Ooh thanks, good to know. I was definitely confused. I don't really read this series, but have a friend who likes it a lot, so figure others might as well too.

I like them too. Mind candy of course, but one likes a bit of candy now and again The 'NUMA Files' series are pretty much the same books with the protagonists' names changed and are enjoyable too.

All eleven (so far) books in the Lady Hardcastle series by T E Kinsey are currently on offer at £1.00 each at Amazon UK:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074C6W8F7/

I've read them, and they're fun cosy murder mysteries. With a bit of spycraft thrown in sometimes.
