Kindle Previewer Won't Convert OPF file?

Hi,

I'm formatting my ebook using HTML. I started from Word, used Word2HTML.com to remove the redundant codes, then cleaned up and edited the HTML using a text editor. I've created a OPF and NCX file for the ebook. The last step is to use Kindle Previewer to convert OPF into MOBI, but when I tried to open OPF, it says it failed to compile the book. The strange thing is, I find it's a hit and miss because sometimes it works fine. It compiles the book, and I go back to tweak some formatting codes, only to have the Previewer refuse to compile the book again. But I've only changed the simple, formatting stuff (things like line breaks, nothing major).

Why does Kindle Previewer fail to compile the OPF file?

You can't convert only an OPF file, it doesn't have all the relevant data. You still need the HTML.

Most likely because the .opf file or one of the files referenced in it was invalid. I'd recommend creating an .ePub file with Sigil. This has several advantages over hand-crafting an ebook:

- Sigil will automatically generate the .ncx file and all other required files
- You can test the validity of your book with Sigil's internal validator and epubcheck.
- You can also automatically generate an HTML TOC from your NCX and add guide items for Start, TOC and Cover.

If your .epub file passes epubcheck it'll also compile without problems with Kindle Previewer. (Kindle Previewer will automatically unzip the epub file.)

Oh, I have the HTML and the NCX file ready to go. It's worked before where Kindle Previewer was able to convert my files into a single mobi file. My concern is that it seems very inconsistent. Sometimes it won't work, and sometimes it will.

That's the strangest failure I've ever seen. It successfully built both the V6 and KF8 portions of the ebook and then promptly bombs when trying to combine them apparently.

I would first suggest not building from within your Dropbox folder -- or at least temporarily suspend Dropbox's syncing while you compile.

Well....this is in passing, at a glance, but I suspect it might be the tmp file that got included in the build. Now...I could be completely blowing smoke, but I don't think that .tmp is a valid media file type, and I think that could be corrupting the build.

That's seriously "FWIW," which is less than $.02, because I just glanced and typed. Naught more.

ETA: We build out of dropboxes all the time, without trouble, but something in your directory structure seems odd to me, so you should look into that as well. FWIW, as stated.

Admittedly, I've never built a Kindlebook with a "media" file, so I don't know what that looks like in a successful build. Perhaps the tmp file (and path) is a normal part of the build process? It does seem odd that THAT file is the only one found at a different location than the rest of the resources.

Could it be the missing cover in the first version?

This is a different path, including the folder \graphics\.

So in version V6 the result is without cover, in version V8 it is with cover.

The different paths to the same cover image do seem a little strange ("\Texts\Test FSG\graphics\TestFSGcover.jpg" as opposed to "\Texts\Test FSG\TestFSGcover.jpg" in the warning). I realize you've probably edited some personal info out of the log, but is that otherwise the "straight-up" representation of the compile details? Or have you stitched together bits and pieces from multiple attempts?
