New PDF conversion software at Amazon?

Last night I downloaded a free ebook: The Career Novelist: A Literary Agent Offers Strategies for Success and was disappointed to discover that it appears to be a scanned PDF. I sent it off to Amazon for conversion and expected to get back a mess. Instead it showed up on my Kindle looking very much as if it had been converted with PDFRead into 1/2 page landscape pages.

This is the first time I've seen this sort of conversion come back from Amazon. Is this new or have I just missed it before?

I've gotten some pretty good results lately from the conversion process, as long a it's a pure text file. The result is still a file that doesn't have the author name properly encoded, so it doesn't get sorted by the author name.

That's inconvenient, so I'm staying with converting it myself with MobiCreator to make sure the metadata is correct.
