Scarborough, Dorothy: The Wind. v1. 03 Feb 2020

The Wind by Dorothy Scarborough (1878–1935)

In the late nineteenth century, recently orphaned eighteen-year-old Letty leaves Virginia to live with a cousin in West Texas. Gently reared and naive, she is not prepared for the harsh frontier life in that utterly foreign place, and suffers a despairing downward spiral ending in madness and murder.

Emily Dorothy Scarborough (January 27, 1878 – November 7, 1935) was an American writer who wrote about Texas, folk culture, cotton farming, ghost stories and women’s life in the Southwest. Her most critically acclaimed book, The Wind (first published anonymously in 1925), was later made into a film of the same name starring Lillian Gish.
