Problem with not referenced files

I have produced a lot of epubs by now, in Sigil as well as in Calibre. But this time, I'm coming to my limits. When inserting images or fonts, I receive - in Sigil and in Calibre - those messages:
Code:
But in the OPF, they are noticed:
Code:

There's likely a folder hierarchy you're missing. For instance your xhtml files appear to be in the OEBPS/Text folder. Unless the files you inserted are truly in the same folder as the opf.xml file in the epub's zip archive, then that's why you would get the "not referenced" message. They're not manifested correctly.

How did you "insert" the files. It's best to use an inherent "Add Files" feature of Sigil/Calibre, so that all pathing will be automatically handled correctly.

Yes, that's what I'm worried about, for I tried in Sigil as well as in Calibre to insert the files in the "classical" ways, as f. e. in Sigil right-clicking on the "Images"-folder->"add existing files" and chosing them from my file system, or right-clicking on the "Fonts"-folder with the same procedure. What is strange to me is that in both platforms, Sigil and Calibre, there is the same result.

In Sigil's BookBrowser hover over each of the images in question and note the full path of each (or use Sigil's Prefs to make the full path always show). Then check for case differences, folder differences, etc. Are they truly identical?

Also, could we be misinterpreting those error messages? Could it just be saying no xhtml file (or css file) actually uses (links to) those files? Have you tried using Sigil to insert a link in to one of those images at the end of any of the xhtml files and then repeating the check to see if that resource error message goes away. What does Sigil's Report on Image links say about them?

Hm, getting always stranger: I clicked (in Sigil) "Tools"->"Convert to standard Sigil file", and the appearence looked all well, i. e. the assigned fonts appeared as well as the images. But when I clicked "Remove unused media files" those are suggested for removal. And when I run epubcheck, now the message is:
Code:
Col: 65: ERROR(RSC-007): Die referenzierte Datei "OEBPS/images/W3Ccss.png" wurde im EPUB nicht gefunden.
(as example, for it's the same with other images. The font, however, has been accepted).
Translation: The refernced file ... has not been found in the EPUB.

That means your links to the images in your xhtml files do not match with where your images are being placed inside the epub.

Please try again without standardizing. Simply hover over each questionable image noting exactly their full path (or set Sigil's prefs to always show it). Then verify it in the opf is an *identical* match. Then search the xhtml files for that image and check that the link to the image is correct (Or use Sigil's Reports feature to do that).

For example if an image is in OEBPS/Text/ then an xhtml file colocated with it should NOT look like "../Images/blah.png"

Please report back what it tells you.

As far as I can see, they are identical, for example
Code:
OEBPS/Images/3Sternchen.png
And the image shows in the book browser!
However, when I replace the ".." in the book browser by "OEBPS", the image vanishes.

It's truly identical:
Code:
<item id="x3Sternchen.png" href="Images/3Sternchen.png" media-type="image/png"/>
    <item id="W3Ccss.png" href="Images/W3Ccss.png" media-type="image/png"/>
    <item id="Exlibris_Bogen_2020.jpg" href="Images/Exlibris_Bogen_2020.jpg" media-type="image/jpeg"/>
In the "HTML-files"-section of the "Reports" feature, there appears the cover, but not the other images.
I just see:
In the "image files"-section appear all images, but the "3Sternche.png" only used once (? - in fact, it should be used 3 times), whereas the other images appear as "0 times used".

That is completely different from the content.opf shown previously. There the href for your image is incorrect for the path you just showed. That makes it hard to say which is wrong and which is right. You appear to be mixing pre -standardized with post standardized info.

Standardization will move stuff all around, hiding the real issues.

Please post the exact opf manifest section for what you just reported.

Also where in the epub is the opf file found?

If it at the epub root? Or at OEBPS/ or someplace else?

That has been my fault: In twop chapters the path has been "images" instead of "Images". And - oh wonder - after running epubcheck again, there's no error message any more!

Thank you for your assistance, however! Gratefully appreciated!

You should never be adding the ../ to any link unless it really lies up one folder in the path or down from there.. Sigil will handle setting the path from the opf to the file correctly. Using insert Image will insert it into your xhtml so that the true path from that xhtml to your image is correctly determined. No editing of the link to the image need be done.

And the fonts not working can easily be explained by the paths in the css font-face declarations not matching their actual locations in the archive. Sigil will adjust css urls if they're changed (as long as they're initially correct), but adding font-files to the epub won't set up the initial css font-face rules. If you manually made the @font-face urls point to ../Fonts/xxxx.otf, but the actual font-files were added to the root of the archive (in a non-standard epub), that would explain why 1) your embedded fonts wouldn't render, and 2) why Epubcheck barked about them being unreferenced, and 3) why standardizing the epub structure suddenly made them work. The standardization moved the font files to where your initially incorrect css @font-face rules had indicated they were.

When manually adding urls to xhtml/css, you can no longer assume that font-files will be in a "../Fonts" folder and image-files will be in an "../Images" folder (or that xhtml files will be in "../Text"). They could be added anywhere in a non-standard epub.

You have to either take the time to figure out where your targets actually ARE in the epub archive before manually adding/editing urls to them in xhtml/css, or you need to get in the habit of always standardizing epubs before doing any editing, if you want things to be where they traditionally always have been in the past.

@DiapDealer: I fear I didn't really understand: How do I add a font correctly to a standard epub in Sigil? Until now, I used the "CssFromFont"-Plugin, and there (in the css) the @font-face urls always point to ../Fonts/xxxx.otf. Or, I made it manually, as you described. Then, it sometimes occurred that I had to remove the ".." and insert again in order to make the font show correctly.
This all I had tried in vain in this case. Why, on a sudden, Sigil accepted the font, I have no idea.

By the way: what is a "non-standard-epub" that one can handle in Sigil?
