Post Japanese mobile ebook market triples

The Japanese market for electronic books for mobile phones has been growing. In 2007 the market was worth JPY 22.1 billion, rising 220 percent year-on-year. To compare: the entire Japanese mobile content market was worth JPY 423.3 billion in 2007, up 16 percent from 2006, and the mobile commerce market was worth JPY 723.1 billion, up 29 percent.

Figures from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC).

see, you read articles like this, and you find it even more baffling that so many publishers continue dragging their feet. ok, we are not the japanese (well, we french are not the japanese, i mean) but even taking into account the different cultural attitudes towards technology and gadgets in general it seems pretty clear that there is a huge market for this which is completely untapped. the market itself might not even realise it's there until we finally GET SOME CONTENT !!! sheesh.

Maybe it's time I tried to learn Japanese. It'll give me something to do in my retirement. Naw, my brain is too old & slow.

I think a lot is Manga and Anime. Still...the small form factor doesn't seem to be a problem there. (Take *that* Mr. Hornby).
