Collins, Wilkie: Den sorte ulv [Danish] v1. 07 Apr 2024

William Wilkie Collins (8. januar 1824 i London – 23. september 1889 sst.) var en engelsk forfatter af romaner, noveller og skuespil. Han er i dag bedst kendt for de to spændings- og sensationsromaner Kvinden i hvidt og Månestenen. Hans fader havde håbet, at den unge William enten blev maler som han selv, eller blev præst. Han studerede en overgang jura, men selv om han fuldførte studiet, kom han aldrig til at praktisere som sagfører – i stedet brugte han sin viden i sine romaner. I marts 1851 mødte han Charles Dickens, og i de kommende år var han en flittig bidragsyder til Dickens' to romanmagasiner Household Words og All the Year Round. Efter Dickens' død blev Collins stadig mere afhængig af laudanum (et smertestillende opiat) og hans romaner koncentrerede sig i stigende grad om sociale forhold, som han opfattede som uretfærdige, fx. kvindens ægteskabelige stilling og forholdene for børn født udenfor ægteskab.


Om bogen
Fader Benwell, en højtstående jesuitisk præst, forsøger at genvinde en engelsk herregård for Kirken – herregården er et tidligere kloster, som den engelske krone inddrog ved reformationen under Henry VIII i 1500-tallet. I sine bestræbelser udnytter han den nuværende ejer, Lewis Romaynes, psykiske ustabilitet og overspændte sværmeriske tendenser i forhold til religion og moral.

En kvinde kommer imidlertid i vejen for fader Benwells planer, og Romayne splittes mellem sin kærlighed og sin tro.
