(It has fbreader and the basic reader app installed. FbreaderJ saves books in a folder sdcard/ebooks (I'll probably change this), Kobo in sdcard.KoboPegasus/epubs, but in weird subdirectories following. Importing a book into Kobo from a different directory moves it out of the other directory and into the Kobo one. I can browse the file system using my computer even when Calibre doesn't recognise it.)

When you say sdcard/ebooks you mean the folder ebooks inside the folder sdcard or the toplevel folder ebooks on the sdcard?

And does copying epub files into either of those directories via windows explorer cause the books to be automatically listed in either of the apps?

I mean the folder /sdcard/ebooks; I do not have a top level ebooks folder. Kobo saves them in /sdcard/KoboPegasus. Aldiko can import from Calibre wirelessly but doesn't recognise which books it already has in its library when I look at them. CalibreLibrary can also import, but also doesn't recognise what's already there.

Copying a book into each via usb of those folders did as follows:

/sdcard/ebooks - fbreader recognises books that I copy directly into the folder (just the epub) and books where I copy the folders (author/title/), while aldiko does not recognise either.

/sdcard/KoboPegasus - Kobo reading app does not recognise anything I copy into the folder.
Folders in this subdirectory look like they're in hex, 8char-4char-4char-4char-10char-1char, so something like 2c1f5f39-ae73-41ec-9038-b914ffb875a7-2 -- the files in there have a content.opf, and then the html files in a subdirectory /OEBPS.

The one epub I imported into Kobo after copying onto the directory has a similar directory name, preceded by S-, and the files are content.opf and all the html files that make up the epub.

Hmm, seems a rather poorly designed device. I'll just create a generic driver for it that will put all epub/pdf/txt files into /sdcard/ebooks.

One final question: can the Kobo reading app import books from /sdcard/ebooks and subfolders of it?

Yes, it can import from anywhere and in particular has successfully imported from that directory.

sdcard/ebooks would be great -- will that be customisable? If not, it's probably the best location.
