But isn't it true that it is legal to download those from, say, an Australian site only if the person is in (and maybe a resident in) that country? If I am in the United States (which I am), wouldn't it would be a violation of U.S. copyright laws to download those from an Australian site? I'm not asking to debate the issue, I'm genuinely asking for information.
Yes, that's correct. Copyright protection depends on where YOU are, not where the file is. It would be a copyright violation for you, in the US, to download the files, regardless of where the files are located, whereas it would be legal for me to do so, because the books are in the UK public domain.

The first three books in the Inspector Montalbano series, by Andrea Camilleri, are available as a collection: The Montalbano Mysteries: Three Crime Novels of Sicily.

The blurb is not very helpful:

Quote:
Synopsis

The first three irresistible instalments in the Inspector Montalbano series from the bestselling Sicilian author.
However, by peering closely at the cover image, I think I can see that the cover, at least, indicates that this does contain the first three books in the series:

The Shape of Water
The Terra-Cotta Dog
The Snack Thief

I have read most of the books in this series, and have liked them all. They are police procedurals with a tinge of cynicism or world-weariness, which feels a bit like the cynicism in Donna Leon's Brunetti series.

Here's the book info:

Pan Macmillan, October 2012
Imprint: Mantle
ISBN: 9781447219620

It's couponable in Kobo India, and probably some other stores too.

The first two volumes, Taming Fire and The Dragonswarm, tell how Daven rises from humble beginnings as a thief’s son, a beggar, and a shepherd to become a warlord feared by dragons and kings alike. But in the third volume, The Dragonprince’s Heir, we’re introduced to Taryn, Daven’s son. With Daven missing for over a decade, only Taryn can stop a war that will leave the world his father saved in a shambles.

The Malla Nunn Collection #1 includes the first three books in the Emmanuel Cooper mystery series: A Beautiful Place to Die, Let the Dead Lie, and Blessed Are the Dead. The series is set in South Africa. It is couponable in the Kobo Hong Kong store, and probably a few other places. I haven't read this series, so can't say much about it, but the Stop You're Killing Me website shows that a couple of the books in the series have been finalists for various awards.

Here's the book info:

Atria/Emily Bestler Books, June 2013
ISBN: 9781476730738
Language: English

And here's a description:

Quote:
Synopsis
From award-winning author and filmmaker Malla Nunn, a collection of three riveting crime novels set in 1950s apartheid South Africa.

A Beautiful Place to Die
A stunning and darkly romantic crime novel set in 1950s apartheid South Africa, featuring Detective Sergeant Emmanuel Cooper—a man caught up in a time and place where racial tensions and the raw hunger for power make life very dangerous indeed.

Let the Dead Lie
When a young boy is brutally murdered, Detective Cooper is forced out of the shadows and back into service, eluding the Afrikaner police as he conducts his own covert investigation. As the murders continue to pile up, with Cooper perilously close to the scenes, he becomes the police department’s prime suspect.

Blessed Are the Dead
Detective Cooper returns in this powerful, atmospheric novel about two communities forced to confront each other after a murder that exposes their secret ties and forbidden desires in apartheid South Africa.

Thanks for the info on the Buchan title.

It looks like the US version is much abbreviated, due to copyright reasons. The US edition has only 3,689 pages.

ADDED: It appears as if Kobo (UK) is the more complete edition.

Buchan is in the public domain in "life+70" countries. His post-1923 work is of course not in the US public domain.

Curiously the page count on my Glo is only 8987, and it is exactly the same book that has over 12000 pages when viewed in Sony Reader for PC.

There are about a million (well, quite a few) Mills & Boon e-Book Collections (romance novels) available in the Kobo Singapore store. Just search on "Mills Boon Collections", and bunches and bunches pop up.

Just in a sad side commentary on the Kobo suggestion engine - I was searching for a good basic text on biochemistry and two of these collections were among the results . Or maybe, I guess, good (bio)chemistry is needed to have a good romance...

I tested three or four without actually purchasing, and all appeared to be couponable in Singapore with the ubiquitous PERKOPOLIS. Don't know about elsewhere - I didn't check.

The Rafferty and Llewellyn Mystery Series Boxed Set contains the first four books in the mystery series by Geraldine Evans.

The four books are:
  • Dead Before Morning, #1
  • Down Among the Dead Men, #2
  • Death Line, #3
  • The Hanging Tree, #4
The boxed set is couponable in Kobo Singapore with PERKOPOLIS, and probably other Kobo stores, although at $4.39 it's already a pretty good deal.

Descriptions:
Spoiler:
Quote:
DEAD BEFORE MORNING
British Detective Joe Rafferty and his partner, Sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn in a murder mystery involving the killing of a young woman bludgeoned beyond recognition, with no ID and found in a secure place to which she supposedly had no admission. Who is she? How has she gained access? And who was responsible for her murder? These are just a few of the questions the detective duo must answer in this first novel in the cozy mystery series. With difficulties besetting them on all sides, including their own superintendent and a media that has decided to adopt the case of the 'Faceless Lady' as their own personal crusade for justice, newly-promoted Inspector Rafferty has something to prove.

DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN
British Detectives Joe Rafferty and his partner, Dafyd Llewellyn, in their second murder mystery investigation, set out to discover who killed Barbara Longman, a woman with no known enemies. But when it soon becomes apparent that the murder has been committed by someone who must have known the victim well, the police investigation shifts to the victim's family, the wealthy and influential Shores. Rafferty suspects that Charles Shore, not a man known to forgive failure, will use his influence to damage Rafferty's career should he fail to find the murderer.

DEATH LINE
Third novel in the Rafferty & Llewellyn mystery series, Death Line sees the detective duo trying to solve the murder mystery, with his own crystal ball, of the famed 'seer', Jasper Moon. Gradually it becomes clear that Jasper Moon was a man of many parts, not all of them very savoury. Moon was a wealthy man but seems to have written no will; certainly, Detectives Rafferty and Llewellyn can't find it. In a case involving as many twists and turns as a snake avoiding capture, the detective duo must take their murder investigation back through the years to the victim's youth to answer that question: 'Who did it?'. And Rafferty fears that after such a long time, the evidence their murder inquiry needs will no longer be there to find.

THE HANGING TREE
Fourth novel in the Rafferty & Llewellyn mystery series. This murder mystery involves the detective pair in the case of the vanishing hanged man. But when the hanged man turns up in Dedman Woods for a second time, the British detectives are able to confirm that he is a man many had reason to hate. Because Maurice Smith, charged years earlier with four child rapes, had escaped on a legal technicality. Detective Rafferty feels ambivalent about the case from the start. Not sure his desire to solve it is strong enough, he has to fight the feeling that natural justice, in winning out against the judicial sort, has right on its side. The punishment has, in his book, fitted the crime. As the usual police procedure continues towards an unwanted conclusion, Rafferty, caught between the law and his own sense of morality, feels this is an investigation that could cause him to demand his own resignation as a detective.

These are backlist titles now self-pubbed by the author, but all were published many years ago in DTB. I myself haven't read any in this series, but am now going to try the first four, at least!

I almost bought it but realised just in time it isn't an epub, and despite numerous hints and subtle suggestions I haven't been able to convert a kepub into anything I am able to read.

Still, sufue, thanks for the recommendation - I haven't read any of her books, so will look out for them in some format I can read.
