Mit "Jahrmarkt der Eitelkeiten" verbindet man gewöhnlich seinen Namen - ja, der Fluch des sog. Hauptwerkes, das in der Wirkungsgeschichte alle anderen verschlingt ...
Dabei hat der große viktorianische Romancier noch eine stattliche Anzahl weiterer höchst lesenswerter Werke verfasst, darunter auch diesen Roman aus dem Jahre 1852, in dem es um Thackerays Lieblingsthema, die Desillusionierung des Titelhelden, geht. Der Autor selbst hielt übrigens große Stücke auf dieses Werk. Fortgesetzt hat er es mit "Die Virginier" (1857-59).
Die Übertragung von Else von Schorn stammt aus dem Jahre 1912.
