Sony Reader demoed at WSJ's D conference

The Sony Portable Reader is quietly en route. When Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher kicked off the forth edition of the D: All Things Digital conference this week, Sony grabbed the chance to talk about its forthcoming e-book reading device.

According to Eric Savitz of the Tech Trader Daily (Barron's new blog, btw), "earlier in the day Sony's Howard Stringer said the success of the device will depend in large part on consumer acceptance; he seemed enthusiastic about its prospects, but cautious. In the demo, it came across as a compelling product."

I wish I had more to say about this but I don't. Just sit back, relax, and realize that the world is a pretty wonderful place. Even if you don't own an E Ink device (yet).

I'll put an "Amen" on that, Alexander.

Seems like Sony's still stirring the market to drum up prospective customers .

I know many people interested by the readers who are not techies. They are difficult to fish out by standard computer news. You have to go with mainstream paper news.

"Just imagine the trees we'll save !"

Trees are renewable. Much of the raw materials that go into plastic and electricity are not, yet.

I have gathered in the last 40 years at least 3000 books, around a ton of paper, and it takes up 20 linear feet of library space which had to be built of wood. Compare that to one pound of plastic. I have now 3500 ebooks that fit on a 2 gb SD card. I say we'll save trees, and I really mean it, that's undiscutable.
