Paradigm Shift debuts $130 EER-051D

This comes from Engadget:

Quote:
Despite appearances above, this one supposedly has a 5-inch color screen, and packs an FM tuner along with the usual MP3 support, plus a photo viewer, 2GB of internal memory, an SD card slot for expansion, and support for most popular e-book formats (including DRM-enabled ePub books).
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/p...%28Engadget%29

From Paradim Shifts press release:

Quote:
EER-051D: Unlike most e-readers on the market, the 5" EER-051D features full color TFT high resolution display with enhanced contrast panel designed for ease of reading and long battery life. It also features a full gamut e-book format compatibility, including: ANSI , UNICODE TXT ,DOC,PDF,HTML,FB2 ,PDB, EPUB (including DRM encrypted books). In addition the EER-051D is an Mp3 audio and Mp4 video player, has a built in FM radio and photo viewer and has 2GB built in memory plus an SD card memory expansion slot. Proposed MSRP: $129.95
The pic doesn't look like it has a color screen. And the name Delstar seems to be attached to it. Isn't that the reader Walgreens was selling that many people here had problems with?

I thought that color LCD screens are backlit. But the monochrome TFT screens of the jetBook and Libre are not backlit.

I wonder if this is a color non-backlit TFT screen. If it is backlit, what makes it a TFT?

I tried to find more specs on this... but apparently Paradigm Shift Sourcing and Manufacturing Co doesn't seem to have a web presence. At least not that I could find.

It's backlit. TFT has nothing to do with the presence or absence of a backlight. TFT displays do not even need to be LCD, though almost all high-resolution LCDs are TFT nowadays.

TFT LCDs come in 2 general flavors: transmissive and reflective (and transflective if you like betweeners). The one in this device is transmissive. The jetBook's is reflective.

The company, based here, said the e-books are part of its Techno-Gadget Line, and will be distributed to major retailers throughout the United States by Delstar Wholesale Electronics of Hallandale, Fla., beginning in late February.

Yes, from their press release:

Quote:
PS's corporate offices are located in Boca Raton, FL the gateway to N., Central, and S. America and Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China, electronics capitol of the world!
However, I am amazed they don't have a web site with info about this product. Unless it is going to be 100% OEMed.

Biggest problem with the Delstar--aside from screwy firmware and lack of customer support--was that it supported several ebook filetypes, but no formatting; all the books showed as plain text, no bold or italic. Possibly no pictures inside the ebooks; possibly no links or ToCs.

Definitely worth finding out if that's true of these before deciding whether to get one. While there are people who'd be happy with a plaintext ebook reader, they'd probably very much like to know that before purchase.

They said it would be marketed in the US under the Delstar Electronics name... however I'm not sure if that is the device that is discussed in this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76246

Looks to be the same hardware as this reader, under a different brand name:

I wonder if Paradigm Shift has any idea of the disaster Delstar made of the OpenBook release? Once can only pray it has completely different software than the identical one currently on Delstar's Website.

It is a cute little reader and I would have loved to have kept mine. I returned it because, as Elfwreck put it, "Biggest problem with the Delstar--aside from screwy firmware and lack of customer support--was that it supported several ebook file types, but no formatting; all the books showed as plain text, no bold or italic. Possibly no pictures inside the ebooks; possibly no links or ToCs."
