I'm happy to hear that. That's not been my experience at all. I'm constantly finding books I want to read that Amazon sells for the Kindle but which aren't for sale by Sony.

I'm interested in both fiction and nonfiction titles of various types. My experience is that if a book is a bestseller then it's probably available by both Amazon and Sony. But I'm not often interested in those titles, unfortunately.

You'll see that there are thousands of books that are listed more than once in that list. Sony hasn't added a lot of books recently. They've simply listed many of their Romance novels, for example, also in the Fiction category. So find a book in the Romance section and then go to the Fiction section and you'll probably find it listed there, too, and perhaps elsewhere. Of course, that makes perfectly good sense. But it completely foils any good attempt to track how many new books they're adding. The actual total of separate titles that Sony is selling today is much closer to 57,000. In which case they are still 43,000 ebooks away from fulfilling their promised 100,000 titles by next week.

In early October, Sony made a public promise to attempt to reach 100,000 titles for sale at their ebook store by the end of the year. Today, they are far short of that goal. In the past two weeks Sony have added about 2000 new titles (a 3.7% increase) and now have about 58,700 ebooks for sale for the Readers. (Note again that previous totals for Sony that I listed in this thread before Nov., 2008 included the sum of books in all categories which included roughly 3500 double-counts). They have added an average of about 90 new ebooks per day to their store since Sept., 2007.

In the same period Amazon have added approximately 4500 new titles (a 2.1% increase) and now have about 218,000 ebooks for sale for the Kindle with an average of 317 new ebooks per day added to their offerings since Nov., 2007.

I've posted biweekly information here for over a year and there's been no significant change in the trend at Sony since Sept., 2007. So I'm going to suspend keeping this up for now and find something more productive to do with my time - like read!

I took a peek (I couldn't help myself) and I see that Sony has added about 5000 new titles in the last month bringing their total of distinct titles to about 63,700. That rate of adding titles is a bit higher than their average rate for the past year and a half but the total available is still very far from the 100,000+ that was promised (back in early October) by this time. Amazon continues to add new titles at a much higher rate than Sony and is on track to reach a quarter million titles for the Kindle (including books, newspapers, and blogs) in a couple of months.
