Zola, Emile: The Fortune of the Rougons. v1 28 Nov 2017

Emile Zola (1840-1902) was the most prominent French novelist and short story writer of the late 19th century, was a social activist, and was persecuted for his exposure of the Dreyfus Affair.

Ernest Alfred Vizetelly (1853-1922) was an English author and war correspondent who translated many of Zola's works and supported him when he fled to England during the Dreyfus affair.

The Fortune of the Rougons, (La Fortune des Rougons), the first volume of the Rougon-Macquart series, was published in 1871. This English version was published in 1898. The book introduces many members of the Rougon and Macquart families, tells of the love of two adolescents during the coup d'etat by which Louis Napoleon Bonaparte became Emperor of France, and includes an Author's Preface in which Zola outlines the Rougon Macquart series and an Introduction and Endnotes by Vizetelly.

The text was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook library, and checked against the 1898 Chatto & Windus edition in the Internet Archive. I have silently corrected typos, curled quotes, replaced italics and diacritics, and made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com.
