I have purchased books for "computer" kindle. now my wife has a nook. how do I convert my kindle books to nook format?

As others have already responded the freeware library management program 'calibre' is of great assistance. calibre creator, Kovid Goyal, is extremely responsive in the calibre forums, as are all the calibre developers! If you haven't already, visiting there would provide some assistance. calibre itself can be found here.
