He carries it around without a case, and then complains that it's broken? I'm afraid that I have little sympathy.

I found the timing interesting with the DX out and all.

Yesterday my Kindle 1 fell out of the stupid leather cover. As it was falling I managed to get enough of my hand on it to change the trajectory so that it instead of hitting the floor directly it careened off the corner of my coffee table first. Now my Kindle looks just like Matt Buchanan's Kindle.

Luckily, my Kindle DX arrived today, but I was going to give my sister my Kindle 1. Good thing I hadn't told her.

He seemed quite aware that it was unwise and it was his own fault it was broken.

I blame Amazon for not including a cover and/or making it known that you need to have a cover.

The Kindle 1 did come with the cover included. He only has himself to blame, but he does have a partial point. Cell phones used to be a lot more fragile, too.

But selling the K2 & DX without a cover may make one think you really don't need a cover for the K1.

Except the guy acknowledged that he preferred to carry his devices without cases and that he expected his bag's padded sleeve to protect the screen.

Which is kind of dumb considering his bag was stuffed and the device has a big glass screen.
