Calibre not recognising/finding my kindle

Hi I read in a forum (that is now closed) to post somewhere here the details below if calibre is not 'seeing' your kindle. It's weird, it usually always recognises it but for some reason now it isn't.

Sorry I looked but I couldn't find anywhere to post this... so I'm creating a new thread. My kindle is recognised by my laptop as its charging as its plugged in.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Restart both. The kindle and the PC (windows updates don't always leave background stuff running when done)

Is there a reason you run 32bit Calibre? (main reason to, is the conversion of complex books that would run out of memory on a 32 bit)

FWIW, Sometimes a damaged cord or low powered cord can allow your unit to be recognized by the computer but not by Calibre. I have no idea why, but I mention it because it's happened to me a couple of times.

Just because the device is charging does not mean the PC has seen the device.

I agree, however, I've had instances where the computer has seen the device, but not Calibre. A change of cord resolved the issue.

I've never seen that. Calibre uses the operating system to detect the device so it's hard to visualize how a device could be recognized by the computer (i.e., you could access the exposed partition as a storage device) and yet not have calibre be able to access that storage device.

Could you supply more details such as type of ereader, computer, USB port type, etc.?

Do you see the Kindle in Windows Explorer? If not, this is not a Calibre problem.

I didn't even know I was running 32bit Calibre.. I know next to nothing about that sort of thing. I take it I should run 64bit? I'll download that now.

I did restart both before but will do it again now.

thanks

no, my laptop doesn't seem to see my kindle.. even though its charging it.

Maybe its a problem with the cord like someone suggested. I'll see if I have another one somewhere.

thanks
