Font Size Per Book

I've scoured the Kobo Forums, but I didn't see anything about this specific problem.

My question is whether or not it's possible to set a font size per book. Some books have incredibly small fonts, so if I change the font size in that book, the rest of my book's font sizes are too large.

Plz halp!

This should already be happening. If you change the settings when reading a book, they are saved for that book and will be reused when it is opened. The settings will also be saved to use as defaults when you open a new book.

Maybe slightly OT, but I would have liked the settings of the reader to be absolute values not relative.

AFAICT, setting the font size to a given value doesn't mean « use a font size of 10pt » but rather « use a font size of 120% of whatever size the book defines ». As a result, I don't get the same, uniform display across different books. Playing with the font size doesn't help, because if the base font size defined by the books is not the same, using the reader's slider allows you to « jump around » the size you're trying to get but most of the time you don't get exactly what you want. Same thing goes for the line spacing for instance.

It's a pity, because to me one of the big advantages of a reader is to get the exact display I want and unfortunately almost each time I open a new book I get a different display...

I think you will find it is the opposite. The font size specified in the reader settings is in points. The range is from 12 to 58. But, the code in the books specifies relative sizes. It is common to find the fonts size in the books specified as "small" or "normal" or as a percentage or some other relative size. It is also common to find absolute sizes in the books. As far as I know these will be used without change.

The only thing you can do is fix the books. If the formatting isn't to my liking, I usually edit them and fix the font sizes used and a few other things I don't like.

Do you use Calibre for that matter? Do you directly edit the CSS file itself? There are so many styles defined with non-informative names sometimes that I'm kind of lost regarding to what needs to be changed, and to be sure as well that there won't be small parts here and there that will be screwed up because of my changes.

I use calibre to manage my books. But, I usually use Sigil to edit them. I look at the code for the text, and use that to find the style to be adjusted.

Part of the problem with the font size adjustment is that the font sizes were chosen to suit the low resolution devices, with lots of fine adjustment for smaller font sizes, but big gaps between the larger sizes that are more likely to be used on the newer high resolution devices. The custom font sizes patch (see the Patcher thread in the developer's subforum) lets you choose the font size that is used at each slider step to suit your particular device and preferences. It doesn't solve the problem where the publisher has chosen a ridiculous base font size, to fix major publisher mistakes like this you will need to edit the book, but it can help where the base size is just a little bit off.
