Amazon brings voice control to its Alexa app for Android, with iOS coming soon

Amazon’s slow push into mobile is getting a lot more real this morning with the addition of voice integration into its Android app for Alexa. Up to now, the app has been little more than a way to manage settings for the Echo and other smart home devices built around its smart assistant.

The addition of voice commands means users can speak directly to their handset the way they would an Echo — to play music, trigger Alexa skills and the like. The update is being rolled out over the course of the coming days through Google Play and Amazon’s own Appstore. A similar update is also on the way for the iOS App Store, but its timing is still up in the air, likely due to Apple’s stricter vetting process.

Under each registered Echo there's the option to 'manage voice recordings'. Clicking through prompts a warning that deleting data will "degrade your experience" and also gives the option to get rid of everything.

Alexa’s wake word can now be changed by voice on Amazon Echo devices

You used to have to dive into the device settings in the Alexa app to change the wake word but now you can do it on the fly with your voice. Just say “Alexa, change the wake word” and Alexa will ask which of the three alternative wake words you would like to use. Speak your choice and you’re all set. I can see this coming in handy to quickly change the wake word temporarily when watching a movie or TV show that keeps triggering Alexa.

Alexa can now send SMS text messages if you use an Android phone

That’s because Apple currently does not allow 3rd-party apps to send messages. On an Android device, Amazon relays your dictate message from the Echo device to the Alexa app and then uses the Alexa app to insert the message into the standard SMS text messaging app on your phone.

I thought of a cool feature for Alexa. I wish we could use her to send books from the cloud to our devices. Now that is something I could use.

Example:

Somewhere in the not very distant past, Alexa now supports multiple, named, lists. Finally! Now I can keep grocery, drugstore, and specialty lists separate.

Funnily enough I was just a few seconds ago looking for this feature, as I want a music list of songs I come across that I don't want to forget about. Unfortunately the feature does not appear to be rolled out here in the UK, as Alexa keeps telling me she "doesn't know that" when I try to create a list.

I knew it was too good to be true. The three songs I heard sounded like boy bands compared to my favorite station on Tunein Radio - The Metal Plague. They also don't seem to have current music. The earliest I heard was from 1985.

Also, when I was deleting the app I noticed it had only 1,000 downloads. I generally don't download stuff with that low of a download count.
