Disadvanges of Microsoft Word HTML for an ebook?

I converted a pdf using ABBYY FineReader to a Microsoft Word doc because it does a good job of recognizing the footnotes and cross-referencing them. Also I find it easier to repair problem footnotes in Word than in Dreamweaver. Unfortunately upon saving it to html, Word uses a lot of tags and code I don't know or understand. Nonetheless, the test chapter I created and transferred to read in Stanza on my IPOD looks pretty good and the footnotes link and cross-link fine.

Here is my question. What is the disadvantage of creating this book as a Word HTML file? I know about the TOC feature in EPUBs which is nice, and I know about the ability to split html files into separate chapters and assign metadata to the epubs. But is there a performance hit in the time it takes to open and flip pages since the ebook is just in one file?

Thanks.

Have you tested a full book with hundreds of pages on some other device?
I think the disadvantage would be concealed on iPad and other powerful device, but may be apparent on slow devices.
But if you create some ePub brochures from Word, then one file will be fine.
And I agree Word is a very good Editor for writing books.

Here, please permit me to give a slight advertisement for my product,
ePub Maker can optimize Word HTML, get rid of those garbage code, and it can split Word HTML and generate TOC.
You will find it a good tool if you like using Word writing books.
