Hi all,
In addition to the more "normal" warnings like WARNING: Unknown KCB data: metadata/edited_tool_versions=3.56.1 WARNING: Unknown KCB data: metadata/tool_version=3.56.1 and WARNING: Unknown kindle_audit_metadata: creator_version=3.56.1 , I'm finding those lately: WARNING: Import symbol table YJ_symbols version 10 max_id 788 exceeds known table size 780 WARNING: Unknown symbols feature: max_id-797 The result it is Successfully converted to KFX in every conversion that shows these warnings. Is this normal? [Software versions: KFX Output 1.53.0, calibre 3.48, Darwin-17.7.0-x86_64-i386-64bit] Thank you. |

KFX format uses a symbol table that holds the vocabulary of features that it supports. Those warnings indicate new entries have been added to that table since the KFX Output plugin was released. Had any of the new features actually be used in the output of the Previewer the plugin would have produced an error instead of a warning. The warning is just to alert me that I need to examine the symbol table and investigate what has changed. I will produce an update to this plugin in the near future that will eliminate these warnings. |

Version 1.54.0 - 06 Aug 2021
Detect Kindle Previewer versions up to 3.56.1. Version 3.55 contains no significant changes. Version 3.56 adds support for float and clear in vertical Japanese books. Conversion is unchanged in version 3.56.1. |

I cannot tell what is going wrong from just this error message. I need you to post the conversion job log in order to look into this further. See the "Dealing with Conversion Errors" section of the first post in this thread for instructions on how to get the log. |

Thanks for keeping this useful plugin alive. I wonder however if you could add one extra option to reduce number of steps in a workflow for other foreign language users.
You documentation states that the plugin is limited to ebooks in a language Amazon supports (not a big list unfortunately). I can easily bypass this language limitation by doing the following: 1) Edit the calibre metadata to temporarily change the language setting to the one that Amazon supports eg. English 2) Run the kfx conversion 3) Change calibre language setting back to the original. If you run the plugin without these language changes Kindle Preview produces an error. Will it be a big effort to add the target language setting in the plugin itself (eg. KFX Output)? As I mentioned before it would simplify my workflow. I am looking for a similar solution that Doitsu has done in the kindlegen plugin in Sigil. It also uses Amazon engine inside. |

A quick possible workaround is to select the option "Use cover from source file" in the Metadata tab of the conversion dialog. The next release of this plugin will have a check for this specific type of error and should prevent it from occurring regardless of the cover conversion setting. It should be available in a few days. I will assume that you obtained this book legally and are attempting to format shift it. As others have pointed out, MobileRead has a firm rule against posting copyrighted material. For future reference, the ScrambleEbook plugin can be used to remove copyrighted text so that problematic books can be posted here. |

As far as I can tell the language setting in Doitsu's plugin sets the language used for the conversion report. It does not change the language of the book being converted. |

Thanks for your reply. Look, it is a big deal. I can live with the current bypass method.
The language I am talking anbout is Polish which is not supported by the KDP platform (and looks like this situation is not going to change pretty soon). In Poland we have funny situation where Amazon sells kindle devices but not ebooks in Polish language. You can buy them in other book stores (either in epub or mobi format) but then you run into all kind of problems with ebook covers and thumbnails which is rather annoying. I played with your plugin for a little while and seems to me that Kindle Previewer has some kind of validation that stops the program to run futher. The interim steps of your plugin go fine, program crashes at the 67% when it attempts to convert to kfx. As I mentioned before, to bypass this issue I temporarily change the language setting of the book to English (calibre library metadata not the source epub metadata). The conversion then runs fine with all characters specific to Polish being carried on to the target book. You can easily recreate this issue by running Shelley-Frankenstein sample set to any language that KDP currently does not support (I believe there is guite a few besides Polish). By the way, it is not true that Doitsu uses the language settings just for the report. His wrapper also invokes external Amazon program (kindlegen) and if I have the language set to Polish I run into the same kind of problems as with kfx conversion. Most definately problem lay with Kindle Previewer application but knowing Amazon repuation one would not expect change in this area very soon. |
