To do a group reading, I suggest everyone read the same translated version.

I don't think that's going to happen, since this is not an ideal world in which we live in.

In the “ideal world” we would all be reading it in the original French.

ETA: I’d be interested, too, but I would re-read my beloved German translation.

I’m a little surprised: shouldn’t there be far more interest for a slightly lengthy series of novels, without a real plot, with vast stretches of larmoyant, essayistic navel-gazing, situated in the obsolete world of the French aristocracy, told from the perspective of a snob? Come on, guys and gals, this one’s a page turner.

I've not done Proust before (looked, but always turned away a little daunted), so I am tempted to give this try - after all, pynch, you gave it such a glowing recommendation . But there are a few things I want to know:

What is a "group reading"? (I presume it's not that we all go over to each others' places on alternating nights to sit by the fire (it's winter here) and read the book together.)

I am assuming the copy here of MR, The Remembrance of Things Past, will be appropriate for the groupie. Yes?

I've always wanted to read this. It would be near the top of my 'really want to read in my lifetime' list but I've resisted so far because of the size. A reading group might help, so I'm very interested. However I'm hesitant because of, ahem, time. I have a hard enough time keeping up with club reading and the like and am very uncertain if I could fit this in right now and read it quickly enough to keep up. So you can put me down as a very indefinite 'maybe'.
