idevices use the iOS Reader Applications plugin for communication, you must have it installed.
Do note, the original author is on indefinite vacation, and the current status of idevices+calibre is in limbo. |

I have been using the iOS Reader Applications plugin for quite a while with my iPad Mini (non-retina) and haven't had any "recognition" problems. However, I'm running with some OLD versions: iOS 7.1, iTunes 11.1, calibre 1.4, Windows Vista. It’s possible that some of my instructions are not exactly the same in the latest versions. First, a quick check to see if the plugin is already installed but possibly not activated: In calibre, click on Preferences > Plugins > Device Interface Plugins. The list is alphabetical; you’re looking for “iOS Reader Applications”. If the icon is GREEN, the plugin is installed and active. If it is GRAY, give it a single click to highlight it and then click Enable/Disable towards the bottom of the screen. If it’s NOT there, move on to step two: Click “Get new plugins” at the bottom of the screen. To alphabetize the list, click on the “Plugin Name” column header. When you find “iOS Reader Applications” give it a single-click to highlight it and then click “Install” at the bottom of the screen. IMPORTANT: Now do what I forget to do 75% of the time! Click the APPLY button at the top of the screen or all your work is lost! As a double-check, go back to the first step and make sure the plugin is installed and activated. Plug in your iPad and you should be good to go. If your iPad is still not recognized, post your version info: iOS, iTunes, Calibre, PC operating system. Someone with a setup closer to yours can probably give you some good advice. |

One thing you can check quickly is to see if you have any other iDevices plugged into your computer. If you do, then Calibre will not see either of them. There can only be one iDevice plugged in at a time.
I sometimes have my iphone plugged in to the computer to charge and forget it's there when trying to put books on my iPad. Never works, and always takes me a few minutes to realize I have them both plugged in. |

Just a thought - have you updated your Ipad to IOS 8.3? I'm not sure, but that could be the problem?
I have access to my wife's Ipad, which has been updated to IOS 8.3 and that won't allow Marvin to appear on my Windows 7 64 bit desktop. My Ipad running 8.2, works fine. |

The risk is that whenever installing software (and a plugin runs software code inside the main program) then if the creator was malicious bad things can happen. Same rule applies whenever installing any program, only most don't warn you.
As a rule of thumb, if a calibre plugin comes from the builtin index, it is safe. iOSRA is well-known and trusted here, anyway. |

No, Apple Care doesn't really matter. What exactly are you trying to do? What reading app are you trying to use?
There are a number of different methods for getting your books from calibre onto your iPad depending on what reading app you are trying to use. |

I have a dedicated email address for my iPad and use the Calibre send to function. Open the email on your iPad and then open the attachment with your reading app. I never could get the iOS plugin or Marvin XD working on my PC to iPad.

You can also open calibre in your safari browser on your iPad, select the book, download it and tell it to open in iBooks. You do have to turn on the web browser option in Calibre for that to work. A lot of people here use Marvin rather than iBooks to read on an iPad because it works better with Calibre. It's also a pretty good ebook reader. |
