This author wrote, to my knowledge, two kinds of novels:

• mystery/detective, remarkable by a fine humour
• adventure, especially of the shipwreck/castaways sort.

This one is of the second kind, with a touch of the first in the plot: there is survival against nature's efforts and those of savages, mysterious map of the island, previous crime, and even romance ... of the kind adequate to the year 1903.
