yeah, I know what you mean. OTOH, there was Klinger.
ETA: You are, issybird, absolutely correct when viewed in retrospect. I was a different person back then, and it was a different time, but this is a series and an attitude that has not stood the test of time. I honestly wasn't thinking, and I apologize for being an idiot. Last edited by CRussel; 02-03-2018 at 12:40 PM. |

I'm nominating Before the Fact, by Francis Iles. This book is the basis for Hitchcock's film Suspicion, and has what I consider one of the grabbiest openings ever:
Quote:
In the U.S., I am seeing the book available only at Amazon, for $4. For some reason, I can't find an epub for sale in the U.S., though it is available in Overdrive. I do see it at Amazon UK (2 pounds) and at Kobo Canada (where the author's name is misspelled Isles) and at Kobo UK (again misspelled). Please DO NOT look at the Goodreads listing for this book if you are remotely interested, because you'll immediately see spoiler after spoiler after spoiler. |

Okay, so when I read the theme for the month, my mind went straight to Philip K. Dick, whose writing has had enormous impact on modern science fiction.
His book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep begat the movie Blade runner, which set the standard for the dystopian future in the 1980's and was an early entry in what became known as the cyberpunk sub-genre. Then there was The Minority Report, Paycheck, Impostor, A Scanner Darkly, and We can Remember it For You Wholesale, which became the movie Total Recall; to name a few. Only two of these were actual novels: A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, so I guess that would be my two recommendations. |
