I would consider a Touch when my iPod dies, as I do think it's a nice media player device. However, as I tend to listen to music rather than watch video it would be a bit wasted on me

Maybe the reason she is recommending more serious works is rather simple... Her target audience is primarily made up of middle-aged housefraus... (primarily, not all) The type that buy alot of books at the supermarket, ie. romance and the latest bestselling thriller... I don't know if supermarkets carry her books, perhaps it is even a way to just get them to venture into a bookstore or library...

Actually, I don't watch videos on it either. For me, the best things are the Apps. It's really just a mini Mac.

Interesting how we all find different uses for these things . I use my iPod Touch more or less exclusively as a portable video player. I've never come across any apps which really interest me.

Ooh I like the grocery app, and lots of games! I've never been a big movie watcher though, so that makes sense.

For me Oprah vacillates between completely uninteresting and mildly irritating. None of the books I've seen listed as "Oprah recommendations" have looked interesting to me so seeing that sticker on a book is a mild negative indicator. However I've never gone out and looked for the list for books to avoid either.

I know who she is, but she and her opinions are simply unimportant to me.

Being geographically challenged I chose Who is Oprah. Her show is not broadcasted on any local channel, we have South American soap operas instead - oh the joy . Nevertheless I find it hard to believe that she would recommend any of the books I like to read. Should I add that I do not watch talkshows?

Apparently there are a lot of people in the world that care about honesty and integrity. Who knew? This goes tripple when money is involved.

The book was sold as being a true account of a mans life. It wasn't, it was lies, and he made a fortune from it and from being on her show. Thats fraud, plain and simple.
Same for the Milli Vanilli......they never sang the songs, but claimed they did. People do not enjoy being lied to, and we certainly do not need to accept it as 'no big deal'.

I would love to say that I read a book without regard to her views on the book. I cannot say that. The history of her recommendations and my likings in books seem to be 180 degrees apart. If I seem a bit interested in a book and find that she has endorsed the book, I drop it from my list of considerations. There was a film critic in the Washington, DC area many years ago and operated the same way. Every time he would pan a film I put it high on my "must watch" list. This proved to be almost 100% accurate. Every film he liked I thought to be a waste of time and money.

When Oprah first started the "book club" I found that I had already read and enjoyed many of the recommended books, so I followed the list for a while and when a book popped up that I had not read, I'd get around to reading it. Then after reading a few books that I did not enjoy, I stopped following the Oprah reading list.

I'm always glad to get recommendations for good books because I tend to get into a rut when reading....reading the same genre or the same authors over and over again. Getting recommendations from people, magazines, news papers and, yes, talk show hosts makes for a more interesting reading list and expands my mind somewhat.

For a few years, I was a literacy volunteer and I worked with a wonderful lady teaching her to read. When she got to a place where she could actually read something, she wanted to go to the bookstore and buy some harlequin romance novels....I don't think much of harlequin romance novels, but hey! guess what! she was reading a book and that was a new and wonderful experience.

As far as I'm concerned anything that promotes books and authors is a win to me. Anything that gets people reading books, no matter how heavy or light the book may be is a good thing. So if someone watches Oprah and is motivated to go get one of Oprah's book club books, that's great. I, personally, may not enjoy the books, but reading is reading is reading and anyone or anything that promotes reading is good.

This just in:

http://fe17.story.media.ac4.yahoo.co...locaust_memoir

Oprah connected with another faked memoir. She needs some researchers on her team, LOL.

Obviously she did nothing really wrong, I just thought it pertinent since we were talking about lying authors and Oprah
