So... is the new firmware update worth it?

Hey all,

I'm debating about whether to update my PP with the new firmware. To those who have used it, do you think it's worth it? I don't want to have to do a heap of technical things with it either, just want it to work simply as it does now.

If yew can program CSS, then the new firmware makes this one hell of a reader.

Right now I am trying to find a way to add fonts to Coolreader. Ennyone know how to do this?

It seems to be behaving better for me than th Dec 09 update did

Someone said TTS is gone..Do not use, have not tested.

Yep, TTS is gone at least for epubs. I have gone back to Dec f/w until I get some time up my sleeve to spend playing around with fb2 and css.

If you have loaded the March, with cool reader, then go back to December's f/w, does the TTS return, and does the Coolreader stay.

In otherwords, does each f/w download the entire section even if it does not change, or does it leave that section out of the next download?

I REALLY want my TTS back, but I also like the new cool reader software. I want both. Is it possible?

The jury is still out for me. The new Coolreader is the only plus in it for me, and although I really like it, I am seeing some instability, such as slow page turning after using the settings page (even crashing once after changing a setting). Mostly it works, and works well - even for ePub (renamed).

Unfortunately no. Going from March firmware to December leaves you with exactly Decembers firmware, no trace of March at all. All firmwares are inclusive, meaning it will wipe the entire boot partition of the PP and reinstall the entire firmware.

I would not be at all surprised if TTS comes back in the next firmware. Perhaps it was taken out as an interim measure while the new version of Coolreader was implemented and associated bugs removed.

I don't know how to program CSS so I guess it wouldn't be worth it for me unless programming CSS is easy to figure out. I mainly read epub, txt, html and pdf so these formats are important to me to work well.

I don't care about TTS so that wouldn't bother me. Though they should bring that back for people who use it.

CoolReader version 3 accepts fonts that a placed in the root of the filesystem in a folder called fonts. When you next start CoolReader after copying new fonts into the /font folder you will see them when you go to the font selection menu in the user interface. If you want to use your own CSS settings the CSS files go into a folder in the root of the filesystem called crengine.

I do not know a whole lot about CSS either, but if you use a text editor to look at the contents of some of the existing CSS files available on the net for CoolReader you can see some of the settings available to change to your own preference.
Concerning your favored file formats, CoolReader is the reader for TXT and HTML, and if you add a .FB2 extension to the end of an EPUB filename then CoolReader will read that too. As far as PDF and, EPUB without the extension addition, you are stuck with the same old ADE as usual.

Thanks for the info. I've been tempted to return to the Dec f/w this weekend, but I've been too busy to experiment. I'm hoping Robertb will chime in sometime today with an explanation and hopefully a solution.

Thanks for the information. From what I can gather it sounds like Coolreader is much better to read epubs with than ADE as long as you put the fb2 extension on which is easy enough to do. Also sounds like it does a good job with text files if you figure out how to use the CSS settings... I guess I should look into that!

Like Laura I'm debating on if I should upgrade to the new firmware.
Does anyone know if the new firmware changed anything for the MOBI/PRC format?

I've yet to try anything but MOBI, PDF and EPUB. I do not care at all for the ADE desktop or reader version. So I may have to see how Coolreader handles EPUB with the unique trick everyone mentioned here.

My biggest problem with EPUB with ADE is it wont remember the exact place I am reading when I return to a book only the beginning of the page and seeing I read in Zoom 5 that is several digital pages back. Does using EPUB with Coolreader change this?

MOBI's reader remembers the exact spot I'm on making it easier to return to my book. I read up to 5 books at time so I'm always switching back and forth so this is very important to me.

I have written to the factory and expect an answer this evening (China's morning).

Also I have written them to change the date to Month Day and Year and to save it when the Pocket PRO is turned off.
