KFMon will not be available for use until after Nickel has loaded. To quote part of NiLuJe's documentation at the Kute File Monitor page on GitHub:

KFMon actually does quite a bit of sanity checking before launching an action. It's very unlikely to brick your Kobo.

My reason for preferring NickelMenu to launch KOReader or Plato is simply that it's easier to tap on the Nickelmenu icon and then select the action than to find the icon to tap on to trigger the action with KFMon. If I ran KOReader or Plato as my preferred renderer so the icons were kept near the top of the list, that might have me going with KFMon.
