Hi, hope you don't mind hearing from me in this thread as well.

Bought these books as EPUBS and when converting them to PDF, ZIP (then renaming as CBZ) or MOBI the text is stripped. Tried converting to KFX and the conversion fails.

Spoiler:
Code:
calibre, version 7.26.0
ERROR: KFX conversion failed: <p><b>Cannot convert Are You My Mother?</b><br><br><b>Conversion error:</b> Kindle conversion has encountered an internal error.</p>

Spoiler:
Code:
calibre, version 7.26.0
ERROR: KFX conversion failed: <p><b>Cannot convert Go, Dog. Go!</b><br><br><b>Conversion error:</b> Kindle conversion has encountered an internal error.</p>

Strangely, Go, Dog, Go! displays fine in Calibre. Are You My Mother? cuts off part of the text and image. Neither display correctly in KoReader or NeoReader on my Boox, but they open without issue in Apple Books on my Mac and open fine on the Android Kindle app after uploading the EPUBs to Send My Kindle. I can send the files if you like but don't think I should upload them as they're copyrighted.

Are those Breaks valid?
I have always used a self closing version,
Code:

The self-closing <br/> is always valid. I also use the self-closing version since that will work whereas <br> without the closing tag may or may not work. Many browsers and renderers will accept <br> without the closing tag but others don't. calibre uses <br> but Sigil considers it as an error as does epubcheck. Several publishers will reject an epub with <br> tags that are not terminated when epubcheck barfs it's error messages.

One interesting oddity is that if you place text between the opening <br> tag and closing </br> tag, most renderers will not display it. I got a freebie epub which placed my email address in about 50 different places in the epub using that trick to hide the text from being displayed.

Code:
OEBPS/Text/Section0001.xhtml,10,236,Col: 54: ERROR(RSC-005): Error while parsing file: text not allowed here; expected the element end-tag

OEBPS/Text/Section0001.xhtml,10,238,Col: 56: FATAL(RSC-016): Fatal Error while parsing file: The element type ""br"" must be terminated by the matching end-tag ""</br>"".

Those appear to be fixed-layout books. That format is generally unsupported by Amazon's Kindle Previewer so a failure to convert is not surprising. Amazon's tool for handling fixed-layout books is Kindle Create. It is a manual process. There is a bit of information about using its output with this plugin to produce KFX in the Converting Comics and Manga section of the first post in this thread, however it is probably not worth the effort to do that.

Calibre does not support fixed-layout books. How they display using it is hit or miss.

Send to Kindle works differently from the Kindle Previewer and is likely the best way to get those books on to a Kindle.

That is incorrect formatting in the error message produced by this plugin and is unrelated to the cause of this problem. It will correct that to use self closing tags in the next plugin release.

In my experience if Kindle Previewer fails to convert to KFX, so will Send To Kindle: it will send 'conversion failure' message and then convert it to fixed layout AZW3. AZW3 doesn't support panel view or virtual panels IIRC, page flip etc.

If you want KFX (e.g. for side loading), and it is in fact comic/manga (i.e. just a sequence of page images), then you need to use Kindle Create after extracting the images (export images using calibre editor).

Kindle Create will also let you add ToC, define panel view (or zero time consuming option 'virtual panels'), and make sure facing pages are properly associated for spreads (if spreads are composed from two separate page images).

Fixed layout ePub which include a text layer for one or more pages are more problematic. I don't know of a way to convert them to a fixed layout KFX equivalent, though such a format does exist (distinct from print replica or comic/manga/kids format). Probably best is to convert to AZW3 for side loading (or use Send To Kindle). I think calibre will handle this conversion okay but have not tried it lately.

FLO ePubs converted by calibre are not usable. I haven't tried one through StK.

Hey all, I've been looking for ways to get the highest possible quality manga on my Kindle Scribe. KCC uses Kindlegen which limits the maximum resolution to 1920px I believe, which is lower that the Scribes 2480 px.

Does using this plugin to convert kpf files created with Kindle Create from the same issue or does it keep the higher resolution?

I don't know the maximum image dimensions that Kindle Create supports, but it is greater than 3000 pixels. Conversion using this plugin will preserve whatever resolution Kindle Create generates.

I tried it now and the image is super crisp. Two issues though.
1. Page numbers are halved, so every two pages increases the counter by 1 page.
2. The book cover doesn't work, neither as a screensaver, nor in the library.

Any way to fix those two issues?

Okay, glad it works for these books. For whatever reason it does not work for this book, though this book is not advertised as working for e-readers unlike the other two. It does work in Apple Books.

Thanks, but converting this book to AZW3 also produces weird results in Calibre. Glad it at least works by Send to Kindle, in Apple Books and in Readest.

Good to know. I stocked up on some Fixed Layout ebooks to read to my daughter while traveling and didn't realize they would be so much more difficult to read/convert.

Update:
1. The halved page numbers are caused by Kindle Create and the double page mode. No idea how to fix this but since it has nothing to do with the plugin, we good.
2. I solved this with creating a PDOC with -p instead of an EBOK. The manga is classified as a document now which I don't care about, but the covers work now, which I do care immensely about.

I'm glad you got it working. I was going to mention the need to mark books as personal documents in order for covers to be processed. I plan to change that to be the default in the next release of this plugin.

Kindle Create automatically generated the page numbers wrong when using the double sided option for horizontal reading. When I used -p to try to generate the correct page numbers, I got an error that it's not possible for fixed page books like manga. Is there any way around this restriction or do I have to live with halved page numbers?
