More than why this? the question is why now? Two days ago, Google wowed the entire world with Google Glass. Everyone is talking about how the future is here and how wearable computing is going to transform everything.

Now this.

It's so bizarre and anticlimactic.

Exactly. It is bizarre. I am not so much against the laptop but who in their right mind will pay this much for browser.

Reports have it priced around $1500. Google has another bargain on their hands.

Given the choice to spend $1,500 on either a crippled laptop or a wearable computer with a HUD, I would choose the latter every time.

I'm hoping that no one will buy the Pixel line for the simple reason there's an obscene lack of internal storage. Google's cresting the wave once ridden by MS and Apple. At this moment, what other company would dare short the user to this degree?

Google wants to strong-arm people into using the Cloud, in part because they want to condition consumers to rent server space or submit to ad streams to make use of the storage they'd otherwise own.

That didn't work with the 8GB Nexus 7. It worked with the Nexus 4 partly because storage expectations on a smartphone tend to be lower.

Giving an expensive laptop 32/64GB of storage is simply offensive. Google's people know exactly what they're pushing for and against at this point. That's why they need to see massive push-back.

It would have been nice to be given time to focus on Google Glass (as it were).

When I first saw this device my reactions were pretty much as most of you above. But it's been sinking in, and I'm prepared to give this one a chance.

Taking the objections in turn:

No onboard storage

Well, 32 GB isn't none, and for those who embrace cloud computing it will be sufficient. For those who want more storage the machine has an SD card slot.

It's just a browser

Well, yes. That's the point.

There are no apps

Google and Microsoft both have the main business applications covered with web offerings. Social media is already rife on the web, and there are already plenty of HTML5 sites out there, growing all the time.

The key point here is that a lot of us have key legacy applications that we won't be able to run on a Chromebook. But Google are betting that there's a sizeable market already of people for whom browser, email, calendar, image editor, word processor, spreadsheet and presentation software are all that's needed, and as long as there are plenty of games it doesn't really matter which ones.

It's so expensive

Cheaper machines are also available. This is an ultrabook equivalent with a world-beating screen.

And that terabyte of cloud storage for three years is a significant part of that price. Three years is a reasonable lifetime for a laptop. Google are saying that the cloud storage is key to using this top-end machine effectively, so pay for it up front and then let us take care of all your backup and storage woes.

That price will come down. I agree with those who are saying this is a flagship device, designed to be eye-catching and to make people think seriously about cloud computing.

Sure it has its constraints, but I've been mulling the benefits myself for the last few weeks (particularly after having to sort out several people's machines for malware and general messiness).

Comparing share prices across different companies without including number of outstanding shares is completely meaningless.

Aside from your allusion to sidestepping malware, I don't see what problem the Pixel solves. At $199, the value proposition is clear. Beyond that?

But three years is not really a reasonable lifetime for your data. Say your family photo or your e-book collection and three years is not a long lifetime for a machine. I've got two machines running on ten years and two newer ones. A 1TB drive costs less tha $100 in many places and is small enough to fit in a pocket now.

No, the machine lacks a BIOS. You could, in theory, put a GNU/Linux distro on it but because it uses non-standard firmware, that likely isn't a very straightforward process.

In any case, installing Windows 7 would easily eat up almost all the space on the hard drive.
