I've started In the Company of Cheerful Ladies, which is the sixth book in The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. I love this series and it's always a joy to start a new one. The narrator of these audiobooks, Lisette Lecat, may be my favourite audiobook narrator that I've encountered; she always does a superb job.

I don't care for the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books, but I agree about Lisette Lecat. I listened to her narration of Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi and I thought she was marvelous. I wish she had a bigger audiography.

Finished up A Closed & Common Orbit. Becky Chambers really has a gift for dropping these sweet little nuggets of alien culture or crazy tech and having them knit right into the world building, where they might stick out like a sore thumb if not handled so well.

I see a Mistborn re-listen somewhere in my not-to-distant future, but now I'm a few chapters into Planetfall by Emma Newman. The introduction/acknowledgments are a little intimidating, along the lines of "I was dealing with the worst trauma of my life while writing and publishing this book," and like the rest of the audiobook, it's read by the author. To her credit, Ms. Newman is a strong narrator so far. It's a little early for any substantial impression of the story, but the first person character, Ren, seems cohesive and emotionally realistic.

I listened to Auschwitz Lullaby by Mario Escobar, narrated by Hayley Cresswell. Based on the true story of Helene Hannemann, an "Aryan" woman who chose to go to Auschwitz with her Gypsy husband and their five children, it's a heart-rending, simple account of a mother's devotion and courage in the face of pure evil.

I'm listening to Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen and narrated by George Wilson. Great mystery novel! Wonderfully narrated. Lots of humor and a few unusual characters. Not many murder mysteries that involve bass fishing.

I just finished re-reading the Kevin T. Collins narration of Balance of Trade, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. I devoured it as an eBook the first time, savored it as a re-read, and thoroughly enjoyed listening to it again. Mr. Collins is one of those narrators who can be quite good, or thoroughly awful. Fortunately, he's quite good for this one, and for the sequel, Trade Secrets, which I am currently listening to.

Tonight I'm listening to Frankenstein, read by Simon Vance. I seem to have 3 different versions of this. First time I've read/listened to it since high school, some decades ago.

Finished Dreamsnake by Vonda N. McIntyre. 3/5, okay, but not terribly exciting. It shows its age I guess.

Currently listening to Drums Along the Mohawk by Walter D. Edmonds.

I just finished reading Sally Field's memoir In Pieces, read by Sally Field. While it was a tough listen/read in some places, I ultimately enjoyed it immensely. Even as I was yet again horrified by what we've now come to know as #MeToo. I've long been impressed with Ms. Field as an actor who somehow managed to transcend her early "Gidget/Flying Nun" persona to become Sybil, and Norma Ray, and Mary Todd Lincoln. This was a fascinating look at the forces driving her to become a gifted and compelling actor. Highly recommended.

Finished The Black Ice by Michael Connelly narrated by Dick Hill. This is book 2 of the Harry Bosch series. LOVED IT! This was Dick Hill at his peak. Excellent story. Bosch is cut out of a case of a cop's suicide. He is then given the cases the cop was working on. Could the cop's death be related to his cases?

I listened to Security by Gina Wohlsdorf, narrated by Zach Villa. This is an odd book set in luxury high-security hotel getting ready for its grand opening; there's one big problem, however: a killer's on the loose, his actions being monitored by the cameras throughout the hotel. The person watching the camera feeds is the story's first-person narrator.

I loved the concept here--the unsettling voyeurism and the claustrophobic setting--but the execution (pun intended!) was gory--stomach-churning gory. It would have been a better book without quite so much blood.

Hmmm, you've tempted me on this one. I wasn't sure I wanted to read what looked like just another celebrity bio.

Definitely not just another celebrity Bio. Besides her willingness to be very introspective about the forces that drive her, she also gives us some excellent insights into the craft of acting.

Done with Drums Along the Mohawk by Walter D. Edmonds. Didn't find it too interesting. Plot was repetitive (Rumors of natives -> Natives attack -> Militia counter -> Rebuild town -> Repeat), characters were 2 dimensional, story wasn't very interesting for someone not deeply in love with US independence history.

Now I am going to start on Eifelheim by Michael F. Flynn.

Finished Planetfall, and it was a thoughtful, fascinating story with a really well-realized first person narrator. I was seeing influences of KSR's Red Mars colony dynamics and Cronenberg/Geiger body horror, and probably a dose of BSG in the religious and political elements. I'll have to pick up more of her work.

I'm in the last of Becky Chambers' Wayfarer books, but I'm not really settling into it. Some B-list fantasy might suit me better just now.
