I was listening to a radio show on Darwin's (200th) birthday last year, and I was surprised to learn that others had previously suggested the idea of evolution; and that Darwin was the first to hypothesize evolution without a god.

What was original in Darwin and, independently, Alfred Russel Wallace, was that evolution could proceed through natural selection. The best-known pre-Darwinian evolutionary theorist was Lamarck, who claimed evolution proceeded through inheritance of acquired characteristics.

Wonderful. Sorry I missed this earlier but the references I'm seeing say his birthday was on the 12th not 11th as this thread was listed maybe due to time zones.

His was probably the greatest scientific theory of all.

Yes, Darwin, like Lincoln, was born on February 12, 1809. By "today" I meant the 12th, since this site uses GMT.
