400x magnification of Kindle screen
I just found this article were the author magnifies the Kindle screen 400 times, and also compares it with the iPad and different types of paper. I've seen some similar comparisons here before, but not at this level of magnification I think.
eInk is quite fascinating, it almost looks organic. It seems like he's planning on doing the same with a Kindle 3 too, which could be interesting. |

Thanks for that - fascinating. Very obvious how much better print is with those photographs, but eInk looks to be approaching newsprint.

Fascinating. Good job I can't see at 400 times magnification otherwise my ereader would really piss me off

Very interesting story. Thanks for posting it. I have to say that e-ink is one of the many features about the Kindle that I love so much. It's like reading a paper book without all the bulk--pus a lot of other helpful features that make reading on it a real pleasure.

Would like to see iPhone 4 in there too. iPad is only 132PPI, iPhone 4 is 326PPI..

looks interesting. I would have expected to see neatly arranged "pixels" for the Kindle. Indeed it does look like an "analog" newsprint, with grey level variations and bleeds. Wonder why it is that way.

E-Ink actually moves little bits of plastic back-and-forth to form letters. I thought they'd be more regularly shaped, but apparently not. And, I'm guessing there's some limitation in the manufacturing process that allows the black bits to show in the white areas, which is why we don't have really white background screens.

Note that although eink is composed of tiny beads/blobs/whatever, these cannot be controlled individually, but only in larger pixels, as can be appreciated in the 26× picture. This makes it look like its resolution is better than it actually is when shown at large magnification.

Remember that even a modest laser printer will print at 600 ppi, which is the same number of pixels in an inch as across the entirety of most eInk screens. So you'd expect paper to crisper. Of course, mass printing with a printing press is different yet again.

Great link.
I'm glad the comments on Mobileread are rather less rabid than those on the original article. |
