Free (Kindle) Clan Wars Omnibus by Peter Morwood [Epic Prequel Feudal Fantasy]
The Clan Wars Omnibus: Books 1 & 2 by Irish author and Star Trek tie-in novelist Peter Morwood (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE) is the complete duology comprising his Clan Wars prequel mini-series to his novels set in the feudal fantasy world of Alba, which tells the story of the rise of the Horse Lords who become the predominant clan of the main series, free courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint, who are e-printing it from its 1993 & 1994 editions originally out from Legend, an imprint of Arrow which ISFDB tells me has since been acquired by the Random Penguin House.
Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else that Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) If you happen to like these and wish to read more, Endeavour has picked up the reprint rights to the original The Book of Years sequence set in Alba, or you may perhaps have already bought it when it was still available for direct sale from Diane Duane's eBooksDirect.com website. Description For the first time ever, The Clan Wars Omnibus collects together two beloved fantasy novels from author Peter Morwood The Clan Wars Omnibus includes: Greylady When going to war, hire allies stronger than your enemy. Not stronger than you. Otherwise getting rid of them can be a problem. That was how the Horse Lords came to Alba, and how they came to rule it. That was how Bayrd ar’Talvlyn rose from a mere captain's rank to become lord of his own clan. And that was how the Art Magic became a part of life and death for the Horse Lords, sowing the seeds of conflict for years to come. But now, Bayrd learns that he has another skill that can fend off his foes: sorcery… Soon, his curse will become his greatest asset. Widowmaker Time may have passed, but Bayrd knows the resentment festers deep within his heart. As Bayrd serves the people over which he is clan-lord, moves are being made that will change life as he knows it. Within the clan, cracks are beginning to show… The old ways of the Albans are no longer suitable for life at Dunrath hold. And there are many prepared to stake their claim. Soon, Bayrd must learn the true test of fate, as he navigates a perfidious gameboard of lies, magic, and maneuvering to try and save his family, friends, and people from destruction. The The Clan Wars Omnibus collects Peter Morwood’s impeccable fantasy tradition of thrilling pace and wonderful world-building in a tale that will draw readers deep into the world of the Albans. |

Well, presumably their own author loves them, which really ought to be enough.
As for what they're comparable to, maybe something like the late Robert Adams' Horseclans series (Wikipedia)? That one's technically post-apocalyptic sci-fi with thinly-veiled historical do-overs in it, but they seem to have that same sense of plotty political intrigue cum horse-warriortastic action adventure sequences and (re)building a civilization under a charismatic leader, at least as far as I can tell from reputation and the one Horseclans book I got from Fictionwise way back when, and a vague memory of having actually bought (but not yet having gotten around to reading) these exact books from eBooksDirect a couple of years ago. |
