Amazon Drive is ending on December 31, 2023

Just received this email.

Over the last 11 years, Amazon Drive has served as a secure cloud storage service for Amazon customers to back up their files. On December 31, 2023, we will no longer support Amazon Drive to more fully focus our efforts on photos and video storage with Amazon Photos. We will continue to provide customers the ability to safely back up, share, and organize photos and videos with Amazon Photos.

I don't really use any cloud service for backups of my files, so I don't have a horse in this race. But I think it's great that they're giving so much time for people to decide what to do or move files elsewhere. Too many free storage sites went to pay-only models giving people only 30 days to adapt to the change, pay up or lose your files.

I self-host my own cloud storage using NextCloud. Works great for my family, but not the solution for everybody, as you have to be somewhat technically astute to implement it.

I've never messed with Amazon Cloud. I assume some level of free storage must come with a Prime membership, but I've never used it. One, because of security issues handing a third party your important files. And two, because at some time it will either become non-free, or go away entirely.

I never used it, even back when we owned Fire tablets. I don't remember why I didn't like it though.

I use Apple iCloud. I can access it from any of my devices or PC's.

I got the e-mail--because I was a user, according to Amazon--but have no clue what Amazon Drive is. I clicked the link to my account and discovered some music files and a few photos I must have taken with a Fire tablet. I have no idea why the music files are there; I recognize them, but they are only a dozen or so of the hundreds and hundreds of Amazon songs I own. Weird.

I didn't know Amazon Drive existed. I clicked on the link and saw that there are some files from 10 years ago when I was a student. I have no idea how they got there.

Looks like if you used the "Send to Kindle" option to get files to your Kindle prior to April 14, 2016, it stored the files in the Amazon Drive. So, I have a couple items there from that. After April 14, 2016, it only saves them in your Kindle Library.

I also have a folder called "Archived Music" that appears to be several things I purchased from Amazon once upon a time (more than 10 years ago.)

Glad this was posted here. I got the email, but I didn't remember using the Drive. Went to it anyhow and found some 25 Gigs of zipped music I had uploaded to Amazon ten or eleven years ago. I think most of it's still in my Amazon Music, but with Linux it's tedious to try to download (and separate out the stuff you can "play for free"). A lot of music is on my old computer in storage, so I spent several hours just listening to music I hadn't heard in a while. (I don't think all of it is on my Amazon Music account, because I've looked for some of it and couldn't find it.) All downloaded now.

I was planning on Deleting the Amazon Drive from my account... BUT I only Found this:

Amazon Photos & Amazon Drive ... ALL in 1 App!!

Seems to me they are ALSO saying they are Stopping Amazon Photos TOO!!!
